Right. As was mentioned, I'd had some ideas as with regards a DoW Tournament at the next Lan. Leaving DoW itself aside for a moment (I'll come back to it), I'm going to talk about the nature of Tournaments.
Most Tournaments are based off Swiss pairings. The reason for this is so that the tournament will after a round or two sort itself out so that the very good players are playing each other, and the less so will be being each other. However, in order for this to work you need enough players/teams to allow for this to happen (A minimum of 8, but 16 for preference), and ideally you want people to be of skill levels that are not too disparate (Though this becomes less crucial as the number of players rises). If you have, say, 5 teams, then your only real options are to either make sure that the teams are very close to each other in skill level (in which case you can either do Swiss or even Round Robin) or opt for a different format that better matches the skill to players in tournament ratio.
With DoW at the last lan, we had 5 teams, of very obviously different skill levels. Out of all 10 games, only 2 were ever really in question. The Top two teams against each other, and the bottom 2 teams against each other. Everyone else either neatly whupped or got a whupping (Correct me if i'm wrong) in their assigned acking order. So how do we prevent this?
1. More Teams: If we can get at least another 3 teams playing DoW, a straight Swiss Tournament become feasible. The top two teams will still beat everyone but each other hands down, but it does make for a more competative game in the mid-lower section.
2. More Players: Play a 1v1 tournament. 10 players seems a good number for 1v1, and will produce a decent tournament. I know people like 2v2, but put simply we don't have the people to make it happen.
3. Assign Teams: Not a popular one this, but if we were to assgin each player of the top two teams to a player from one of the bottom 4 teams, we would have 5 teams of similar skill levels, and could do a good, competative 5 team round robin tournament.
4. 3v3: If we were to rustle up 2 more people we could have each of the top 4 as captains and pick teams for them for a 4 team tournament, in a not dissimilar way to what is being done at BF2.
5. 2v2v2v2: Yeah I'm reaching now, but this might provide a mitigation to skill difference. Or it might result in the reaming of noobs like me for their resourses. hey ho.
Those are my opinions. Thoughts?
