'lo.
Sid suggested I run an ArmA tourmanent in the 'Guest Tournament' slot of the next LAN. So here it is. The poll at the top is to help me decide on certain parts of the missions [mentioned below] and to help sid on timetabling. [Would be nice if you had a read then voted ;)]
Missions
The Tournament will consist of three missions, each getting a little more diverse and involved as the tournament progresses and are aimed to give people a good taste of what ArmA is about/can do. How complicated they are depends on your side's CO. Because this is primarily an introductory tournament, I'll be filling the 'notes' section of the briefing with hints on play etc.
Mission #1 - Meeting Engagement - 5 min plan/ready - 20 minutes max gametime.
US & SLA forward recon squads clash in a forest Small scale, close ranged combat.
Mission #2 - Capture and Hold - 5 min plan/ready - Plays till end of the first hour.
Teams gain points by capturing and holding sectors on the map. Standard affair.
Mission #3 - Coop - 5 min plan/ready - Ends at the end of the tournament.
SLA forces attack from their base in the Northern part of the island using a combined arms force attempts to crush the capitalist dogs in the South 8-). Lots of action on a larger scale using armoured vehicles, light vehicles and airborne assets.
Teams
Teams will be picked by how people slot themselves up in the initial PvP. Vent channels will then be split and will be kept for the second PvP as well. Teams are nothing formal although I may switch people around if those with OFP/other experience are stacking a certain side.
Cake
Hope I've made it seem attractive enough :P This will be very different to the demo, as the demo was shit. As for getting the game, 505 copies will be universally available [including Full Demo versions] after the release as well as at the LAN. Any questions just ask :)
Performance
ArmA's performance has improved since the demo and german versions you might have played. 1.05 also gives the option to remove the grass which gives an additonal 10-15 FPS and grass will be turned off for the missions we're playing. So if your computer died previously, it might be worth trying the 1.05 patch to see how it goes.

I'm going to pick up a copy of ArmA today. I'm looking forward to another big game as the one at the LAN was lots of fun despite the uber glitches.

I quite like ArmA, but are we in danger of making the lan all tournaments and no gaming?

well tbh this is not a tourny as sutch more like organised games, arma / ofp tournys tend to be ghey ass ctf's and the like, these games will be slow paced and tactical .
unless one team decides to zerg rush and get mowed by mg's

@Dave - I'm not emphasising tournament pvp play. This is more of a 'let's play ArmA a bit and see how it goes'. The prizes will be very much secondary to the gaming and will be focussed on how people function in their units with regards to co-operation and teamplay as opposed to who does the most pwning.
Going for a casual but organised atmosphere.

That sounds fantastic, I'm all for playing ArmA more, given the taste at the last lan, but at the moment, we've got 6-7 tournaments.
It's probably semantics.

Yeah, I would agree that there'd be too many tournaments if it was all solid competitive play, but this is really just an organized game so we've got a bit of structure next LAN.
Similar things are happening for BF2 and Sourceforts, I think - but we've been playing them for ages, everyone knows what we're doing and teams can be picked on the day. This thread should hopefully just let people know a little bit about it because it's a new game.
I've renamed the title of the thread to "Organised Games" to avoid confusion.

:P Probably more suited. Depending on the numbers, I'll tweak the Missions we'll play to suit. Might end up doing coop for the two hours, which is fine :P
But regardless there will be some organised games.

I bought ArmA and Supreme Commander on Friday. Too much gaming to do with so little time for my project left over. Oh woe is me.

^SupCom is quite fun. Can't be arsed buying it though. Will have to get some Hamachi going.
How are the ArmA public servers? :P

I'd love to see an Arma game up during the Lan, even though I pretty much suck at this game:P

Main post of this has been updated - mission types and team sections have been changed. There is also this note:

The 1.05 patch worked great for me, now the game is pretty much playable with most things set to max.
Too bad the grass will be turned off for the tournament though, won't this affect sneaking around?

I will have a console in game that I can play with. The removal of grass is just in case someone is borderline - would like as many people to play as possible and if turning grass off allows one more person to play then it'll go off.
If all players are fine for FPS, I can put grass on using my console and do other stuff like tweak the viewdistance, set people I don't like to 10,000 feet in the air etc

If I'm playing grass will be off, it has been a problem for ATi cards for a long time now, I used to know what method the Nvidia cards used that ATi refused to adopt at every single hardware revision until finally they worked out how to do it with the X1### series. Only 6 revisions later.

1.05 makes my copy crash whereas 1.04 worked fine. >_<
I'll try and fix it tomorrow when I can be arsed.
Uuurrahh
5th March 2007, 23:20
Did you use the right patch? The 1.04 > 1.05 one [about 200mb].
Octavion
6th March 2007, 00:15
Yep, now it crashes every time it finishes the check box bit, I'm well pissed off.
I may try updating my graphics card drivers tomorrow and see if that has any effect.

well tbh its my new card not the patch, if i was still om my ofd card i would be getting the idea there was a small hamster painting the frames onto my screen
What do I need for this Arma thingy - got a 2.8 gig download, not installed yet.
Uuurrahh
7th March 2007, 17:09
If the download is an English version, you'll need PATCH ver. 1.05 EURO [~200mb].
If it's a German version, you'll need PATCH ver. 1.05 INTERNATIONAL [~400mb].

If you've lost your CD key and need one, I can send a file over that will make new a shiny new CD Key *cough* or you can get it publically.
At the moment I don't believe there is a no-cd for the latest patch so you will have to insert your purchased game DVD into the drive. [will keep an eye out]

Of course all of the above chat is about a perfectly legal copy of ArmA that you have isn't it? Otherwise, MODS!!!
Uuurrahh
7th March 2007, 19:20
Why of course. ArmA is available through multiple high street gaming shops.
i.e. no promoting piracy on public forums

Whoever edited the post above, google "Sprocket" and check the Morphicon site.
Have you not heard of Digital Distribution?
Incidently, for those of you like me who object to placing your purchased DVD in the drive whenever you wish to play the game, gamecopyworld.com has a no-cd crack that can be downloaded here:

Googling isnt the easiest way - you get loads of hardware stores. The link is here (http://www.armedassault.com/buy.html)
