View Full Version : March LAN - Starcraft Tournament

We're going to try and run a Starcraft tournament at the next LAN. I'd like to get a feel for how many people would be up for playing, so please vote here. Hardly anyone has played SC a lot, so the tournament format will be slanted toward being as beginner friendly as possible: don't worry about not being good! Almost no-one is :)

EDIT: Maps: After thinking about it, and with some advice from Ming, we'll just keep things as simple as possible and play every round on the same map. Starcraft has a million things to learn, having to memorise map details for lots of maps is an unnecessary burden. So, practice Lost Tmple Gamei to your hearts content. You can get it here (http://www.wgtour.com/map.php?datab=broodwar)

EDIT: Prizes! First place will get a new copy of Starcraft+Broodwars, courtesy of YcMing.

EDIT: Now that I've seen some numbers (and: yay! players!), I think we can definitely have a fun event. None of myself, Pit or Ming mind not playing, so we are going to be setting up and organising the games, only taking part as adjucators and observers. Therefor, the rest of you have everything to play for. Get practicing!

Likely tournament format (times may be likely to change to accommodate the LAN schedule):

Swiss style tournament, with 3 or 4 rounds (depending on the number of players). Each round will be 30 mins long, played at Fastest speed. I recommend you practice at normal or fast speed if you are new to the game, and don't worry about the tourney games playing quicker - your opponent will have the same disadvantage. If the game is still going on after the round time expires it will be declared a tie. A win will be awared 3 points, a tie 1. We should have a feature match each round on the projector, with expert commentary by one or more of the judges. (players will of course need to be wearing headphones).

We might also fit in an exhibition match; hopefully Raymond will turn up and he and Ming can show us how it's done. If not I guess I could take a beating on the big screen, to show both how it's done (Ming) and how not to do it (Me) in the same game.

I haven't played Starcraft in about 6 years so I up for giving it a go again.

more competitive "structured" games, sure; but splurting out games never played to get a tourney makeover - im not convinced.

Im sure a mega drive Earthworm Jim tourney would get just as many "Sure, I'll give it a go"s.

I don't know Gor, but the first two lan, i don't think u were there, we did play a few games starcraft. Just because you wasn't there, doesn't mean it never got played.

But i understand what you mean, i am sure if Iain notice there weren't enought interest, This idea would just get scrapped.

It was my idea to run a Starcraft tournament - well actually, I think Ru may have suggested it as well. My reasons for the idea were that starcraft hasn't been played at a LAN for about a year, as far as I know, but as a result, a lot of the guys who used to play have stopped coming to the club. Maybe if we give the game a little shot again, these people will come back.

I understand gor's point about there being a whole heap of tournaments but it doesn't really need to be a strict "tournament" - just a few organised games where a winner(s) will be announced. There's going to be a small-number game running in the background too, so I think it'll be fine.

Guest tournaments im willing to enter to make up numbers, and try something new (like Arma) - but other than that, tournaments should be based on demand. Naturally you will get a fruitful response if a poll is open. But I have yet to see a poll asking "Which tournaments would you like to see"

As far as im aware only iain and perhaps 2 others have played starcraft at LANs in the past 2 years (in your absence ming).

As I said on MSN there, it's the same with Dawn of War, there's just a small number of people who actually play it and the rest just join in because the tournament is going.

I'll give it a go if I can squeeze some space out of my HDD. While I get the processor upgrade maybe Jan can gimme a hand making my SATA drive a proper slave or even master HDD for my comp. Be afraid! That'll open 200GB of stable HDD!

Points taken, the reason didn't come to lan is not that they don't play starcraft anymore, is just that my pc simply can't run enough games you guys play.
Now i just kinda upgraded my pc, should hopefully able to run BF2 and CS:soruce and stuff like that.

Well ... Why not, when the sc tounament is going on ( assuming there are enough interest),then at the same time run other tournaments as well ?

Gor can i lure you in anyway :P?, not give it a try anyway :). You are pretty good at DOW , if u like RTS, you can't hate sc that much.

Oh it doesn't actually matter to me, if i play in it or not, but i will certainly give iain a hand to get things going smoothly :).

A tournament is probably the most efficient way to get a scheduled slot for SC. As another 8 player capped RTS, big multiplayers tend to leave dregs of people out, and take an awful long time. A tournament can be scheduled to take up a slot amount of time. It won't be a competive tourney, more just a structure to enable play.

"If the game is still going on after the round time expires it will be declared a tie"

This is not quite right .. if is only 30 mins, and i am on a losing side .. i would just defend and build everywhere so i last the 30 mins ..

I think the final decision should depend on the judges.

Sideshow
17th February 2007, 17:46
you really think you could last 30mins by playing hide the farm?

YcMing
17th February 2007, 17:57
Well .. it is possible :), but if they are playing a losing game and 15-20 mins has pass, they could just defend solidly .. till 30 mins is pass and get a tie out of it .

What we need for the big screen is an exhibition multiplayer game with Ming, Raymond, Weeble, Iain, Charles and Pit. That would be fun to watch.

King Starts off the game by commencing the cushing of Pit. After Weeble attacks however he declares a truce and pulls out of Pit's burning base. Pit, now no longer a power, spends the rest fo the dame playing hid the farm and using hit and run tactics to piss off other players, with a preference for stabbing King in the Back. Charles Turtles like no man has turtled before, as his ever expanding empire of Vulture mines marks his territory. Ming, after a few slight hicups tackling Raymond, The proceeds to smash all other players at the same time.

THAT is what would happen ;)

Well it's probably only fair that I really enjoyed the SC tourney. (seeing as how I won and all - did I mention I won? - I was happy about winning) I definately would like to play with the big boys next time, I remember that it was only through a constant pumping from iain that I learned how to play DoW and it looks likely the pattern will repeat. I'm not sure that the lan should really see all the action, why not announce players and match ups and only have the final rounds played at the lan. That way we do play at the lan but are not as badly restricted with time. I can't say that I want to replace DoW with SC just yet, but I really don't think there is room for two RTS tourneys and with the IMBA currently rampant in DC; SC is the logical choice if not for numbers of total n00bs - myself included.

Also, do not schedule games side by side, both arma and SC felt reduced numbers becuase of this.

Cheers to Iain, Pit, Ming and Raymond for organising and providing a prize for the tourney, I guess I'll have to practice to show my appreciation. :)

Despite building over 5 different kind of buildings to try and find an Observer... heh, I thought this was great. Those that played were all on a par with skill level, excellently organised and I hope there will be something of the like in the future.

Will mention this in the LAN feedback thread, but free time is something I'm going to have to seriously look into. i.e I would have loved some 2v2s at Starcraft, or 4v4s if they can go that high.

So it was a good call definitely.

Enjoyed the SC and depending on money I might even consider giving Company of Heroes a go. Maybe we could add a few more RTS despite what Yega says. There are a few people who I'm sure would approve of some more action in that department compared to the excessive FPS time.

I am glad people actually enjoyed the Sc tourney :). There were definitely alot of interesting matches. I espcially like the one where Ru vs gor, it was pretty good timing on gor's part, where he ran in just as Ru ran out. I think alot of the skills came from you guys been good at DOW, i guess RTS's skills are transferable. ( or may be not, i am totally useless at DC :P)

And well played Yega, i still have to watch to get the replay from iain to watch how you play.

I would like the SC tourney to continune, and i am willing to organise it along side with Iain , if there are enough interest.

If any one wants a sc cd-key to try and play online, pm me i got enough to provide everyone ;).(string, i'll sent u one on msn tonight, if you r on)

And yes, sc do support 4v4 :), during the lan i was going to organise a 3v3 for you guys, but that never took place, and it would of been fun to watch!!!

^In agreement. All of the people who ended up playing ArmA 'seriously' [5 or so] would probably have played SC. I know I was up for it were it not for the scheduling.

Yeah, the games were in general pretty good, with a lot of back and forth. Aaron gets the award for Best Cheese, with his proxy-factory build.

I shall do an overview with all the replays :), let me go and watch them now ^^

oko done :),

the End results were:

Yega: 9 points
Caveman: 5 points
Ru: 4 points
Gor: 3 points
Strings: 2 points
Phizz: 1 point

The above score no way reflect the way how amazing some of the players actually played~~ Phizz was one of the most experience players there, yet the crappy score was due to the 30 mins rule and he kept drawing.

Anyway now onto some comments for each players :)

Yega: He has manage to pull out some perfect standard build order (iain's magic), and his timing, micro, macro was head and shoulder above everyone. In the game yega vs gor, his dragoon's micro was really impressive.

Caveman: Have a great insight into Terran, and know his units very well and effectively counter each protoss units. At times i think he could of been more aggressive :), but his cheese vs phizz was just a classic !!!!!

Ru: By far the most creative player, He even tried to fast expand, cannoning infront of his enemy's base and his micro was up to notch, DOW must have gave him these ideas.

gor: He made the best move in the whole tourney, and his game vs Ru is a must watch, i love his idea, when ru waited outside his base, he ran in and attacked, this forced ru to run all the way back to save his base and the timing was just perfect. And his macroing and microing again was solid, again that must due to his experience from DOW.(note: try to use the "a" key instead of clicking, so they don;t target one unit :))

strings: He played better than he actuall thought he did, also he has done some nice moves against Phizz, where he drop 2 archons in his enemy's base. The only thing he would need to work on is his basic skills.

Phizz: The most experience players, his macroing could easily match yega's, the position he is at, no where reflect his skills level. and he does know the game really well. If u watch his replay, he does control the game as a whole really well.

Anyway, You guys played so much better when i started, i was so bad >< , i am actually really impress with how all the game turned out, never thought it would be this interesting. Hope you guys keep playing and enjoying the game :).
