View Full Version : Lan #4 March 06/07 - Organised BF2 Discussion

ok so theres been a lot of people saying after the february lan that they missed the 'organised' or 'competitive' element of bf2.... (in fairness, after the lan before, people complained it was too competitive... theres no pleasing some...)

so i propose that an organised game is scheduled for next LAN, with organised teams / commanders / squad leaders. this structure wouldnt apply to every game of BF2 - just a few rounds, where screenshots of round scores could be taken and tallied up at the end with perhaps small prizes involved for various achievements, or given out in a raffle-style 'each point you earn = one raffle ticket' (everyone has a chance to win, just the players with higher scores have a better chance?)

a rough idea of how to organise it might be - one city map / one open map. (one on satruday one on sunday?) each team plays as both the USMC and MEC/Chinese on both maps (for a total of 4 rounds @ 20mins/round approx.) scores/tickets are noted at the end of round and after 4 rounds we have a clear winning team, plus a tally of who had the most points overall, most flag captures etc.

map choices? kubra dam 16 and karkand 16 seem to be the most popular at the LAN. suggestions please! (poll maybe?)

commanders/squad leaders? nominate yourself if youre interested.

this is just a rough idea, but i think itd be a lot of fun. any complaints/suggestions/support would be appreciated.

I think the organised element is what appeals to most [proper vent setup, squads, plan and commander] but the competitive element is always nice enough.

Sounds like a fairly good setup. Spreading it over two days is also an idea - sometime on Saturday and as the 'wake up' game on Sunday. 1pm or something like that, so people who don't get out of bed are collectively shat upon by their team who are one man down.

Karkand 16 most definately as for the other I'm not too bothered.

Hit the nail on the head there. There's just no way of pleasing absolutely everyone. Unfortunately.

Maybe make it an uneven number of rounds (ie 3), to cut the volume of bullshit and bitching. Possibly have a warmup round on each map aswell (which doesnt count towards the score) to give the teams time to make sure they are all set up, all members are present and everybody has their game face on (bringing it back up to 4).

I would suggest trying a squad v squad system, scoring based on squad teamwork total. You are against all other squads, could be USMC that win, but potentially the best squad could be on the MEC losing team.

Squad leaders assigned by mogwai and a coloured card system could be used similar to gumpcom for the rest. Commanders are not in contention to win anything, just basically assist the squad teamwork where possible.

If we are looking to award on an individual basis, maybe we could work 3/4 SL scores, against the other squad member scores.

I'm up for that.

Lets make it happen.

Just out of interest, what is the Gumpcon way of doing it? Plus can I suggest coming up with your own system if possible, since you don't just want to be a small version of Gump.

Good call Larry, sounds good. BF2 definitely needed some structure in light of last weekend, the Sunday games in particular were utter baws. Due to the more complex nature of the scoring in BF2 and our relatively low numbers, I've avoided too much competition. This looks like a good plan however and we shall straighten out the details at the next committee meeting. Nice one!

...small prizes involved for various achievements...

How about shitty tinfoil medals for in-match achievments (kinda like the BF2 awards) like 'Most Comic Death', 'Lowest Achiever', 'Most Bitching', 'Rapist'...

Just a thought.

Gump dont actually play BF2 tournaments.

For big public games, however, like CS, BF2 and others - coloured card was handed out at the beginning of the lan - yellow - green - red - blue - and repeat along a line of tables. Then an admin would announce green and blue players in team x in an attempt to make the game more balanced and seperate the pro clans who are likely sitting next to each other.

Can I draw your attention to this thread (http://www.pausegaming.com/forum/showthread.php?t=700#post7613).

EDIT: Also not a fan of the vehicle-free games. I felt a little pointless playing spec-ops when I didn't have anything to C4, and I know Pit was irrate at have his anti-tank skills completely undermined.

I think your first post is pretty much perfect. One map each day. 4 rounds per map. 2 rounds per team. Mogwai chooses commanders and squad leaders and we choose players school-style on the day.

My only concern is that we may need to be looking at 32-player maps. I can see us getting in excess of 20 players wanting to play.

Also, I'll move this to LAN discussion since it's closed related to the next LAN.

I'm not bothered about being commander or not, I can happily do it if no-one else wants to but don't knock someone else back in favour of me doing it if others want to, you know?

ok it seems people are quite up for this. im happy to choose squad leaders and commanders, or at least provide shortlists. i'll update final choices closer to the time to confirm commanders/leaders, giving people time to say if they dont want to or alternatively give notice if theres a role they really want to play. if i dont hear anything back, im putting you where i want you!

commanders: 2 of the following (1 per team)

mogwai
greasel_burger
sid
fyndir
bluepixie

squad leaders : 6 of the following (3 per team) - off the top of my head, sorry if i missed anyone whos played a lot of bf2 / knows the maps well.

whoever else is up for it

map 1:
saturday 1pm-2pm. (depending on other events)
32 player Strike at Karkand - INFANTRY ONLY
each team plays one round as USMC and one round as MEC.

map 2:
sunday 11am-noon (depending on other events)
32 player Dragon Valley (with vehicles)
each team plays one round as USMC and one round as MEC.

screenshots of final team and individual scores and player awards taken and tallied up at the end.

small prizes if any can be awarded as seen fit by the committee.

id expect 20 players for this, but hopefully a more accurate player-count can be had by the time of the lan.

1 commander + 3 squads of 3 members per team = 10players a team.
squads should be of uniform size (or as close as possible if the numbers dont add up) to keep it fun and balanced. once squad leaders are decided organise squads amongst yourselves so you can squad with your mates.

Ignore that, since I can't come anymore.

sorry. -_-

That sounds like a good plan. I up for being a squad leader as my l33t medic and spec ops skills mean I'm not usually up in CQB and provide a good spawn point.

3 rounds, 32 size maps (prevents being zero'd) 45 min round limit

Most blanced maps: shaqi for infantry, dalin plant for aircraft, Karkand is a good fun map, but it can get fustrating. Mashtuur City is a good blance between infantry and tanks.

Problem is with teams... 12 vs 12 is proberbly the best for fun...but we're not lightly to have that many people...

Idea!

Squads!: each squad will play with a different squad each game, the squad with the highest number of wins after.

Also, do not have me as commander please! i hate the job and i suck at it...TEAMKILLED BY ARTY!

So basicly

Squad 1 and 2 vs squad 3 and 4

1 and 3 vs 2 and 4

3 and 2 vs 4 and 1

and so on

And the commander will be elected by both squads

on another note...i think i could profit from this  Greasel for hire!

bit late to post this idea, but i was thinking that we could have the top 3 players vs everyone else at the next lan? no prizes but it would be cool to see something like this

the film Zulu springs to mind... but seeing as it'd only take 5 mins to get slaughtered, id be up for it between games or whatever.

[GST]-MrCheese & Turkmenbashi in the second one.

The first round was a good one and in no way reflects my usual standard. Moreso the second one in which I was strictly bottom half. :P
