Allright everyone, it's been five days now since my PC went dead.
I had decided to setup a RAID0 configuration on my PC and had purchased a floppy drive just for this, I set everything up, wipe the drives and get ready to make a RAID driver floppy disk.
The moment the floppy drive switches on though, it bursts into smoke and I quickly switch everything off.
My MB is currently dead, getting a replacement next week, and because of this stupid floppy I also need a new copy of windows, most likely vista as OCUK doesn't stock XP anymore.
Meh, what I don't do to make the february LAN.

hang on a moment lets take this piece by piece.

1) Was it teh floppy that caused the death or your cack handed installation? If the former then any and all things lost due to its failure are likely to be covered. If the latter then I really want to know how you managed that!

2) Why do you now need a new copy of windows? If it simply the matter of a floppy drive then you can borrow my snazzy LS120 (runs of the IDE rather than floppy controller) that I never use and has proven to be about 10 times quicker than a standard floppy too!

3) Yes they do:

4) Why raid? Are you desperate for bandwidth and have more space than you can fill with porn (the later part of this statement is always false btw).

I am getting sent a replacement board, the floppy was proven as to be faulty to begin with so hopefully the replacement will get here within the week.
The reason why I need a new windows is because the moment you change MB windows needs to be repurchased or something, at least thats what ppl tell me.
I thought I might as well get Vista now seeing as the price of XP and Vista is close to the same and all my games are compatible with Vista and all programs I use as well.
The reason why I wanted raid was because I've never fancied partition or several HD's but now i'm sticking with 3 separate HD's, the whole floppy thing has put me off raid for the time being.
Just means i'll have one HD for programs, one for video files and music and one for backup.

This is the biggest load of crap I've heard, bring those responsible to the front of the class for ritual humiliation.

Since Win95 it has been almost essential to reinstall your windows on MOBO change (that is from one MOBO chipset to another, not a straight swap). However Vista is the first to introduce mandatory licence purchase after it has been installed on multiple computer 'incarnations' but even Vista allows up to 3 component changes before being a gaywad and requireing re-purchase.

Normally, the new motherboard -> new widows thing depends on whether or not it was the OEM or Retail version of Windows you bought, and whether or not you want to break the law (ie. you can install it anyway but it will break Microsofts Licensing Agreement). However, since your change of hardware is due to a defect, you don't need to worry about any of it.

“An upgrade of the motherboard is considered to result in a “new personal computer” to which Microsoft® OEM operating system software cannot be transferred from another computer. If the motherboard is upgraded or replaced for reasons other than a defect, then a new computer has been created and the license of new operating system software is required.”
