Any headway been made on this yet? I guess you all have exams or w/e but obviously we don't want a repeat of the last time.

I asked Pixie this same question today on MSN. The second weekend in February (10th and 11th) has been requested however Gary (QMU president) hasn't got back to Niall.

lo all.

Gary has finally got back to me, we should know if these days are suitable very soon.

2007

February - 9th, (20:00 onwards to setup),10th and 11th
March - 9th (20:00 onwards to setup), 10th and 11th
April - 13th (20:00 onwards to setup), 14th and 15th

However, the QMU is in a spot of bother with their IP and we might not be getting Internet access at the next LAN. I should have the full details of this soon.

Say tuned.

I was also wondering if it will retain the same format as last time. Obviously there's a bunch of new games that people want to play multiplayer, but to avoid excluding people who can't be arsed/aren't interested/don't have the time to grab 10 games, learn them to a degree of proficiency and have them on their machines, fully patched, for a weekend of use, could we maybe focus on the "Big 3" that almost everyone plays? (I am of course referring to BF2, DoW and CS:S) I felt that there was a very high amount of downtime at the last LAN and not nearly enough big games played, with people frequently fragmenting to play defcon solo or ad hoc CS:S mods. Ultimately if someone says, for example, "who fancies a game of Armed Assault" then 3 people who have never heard of it go "yeah i'll give that a go", so they have to copy the installer, install, patch, which can be up to an hour's downtime for a game that's really only going to be played once, and that's not even counting how long it will take to play as people have the practise round, then the real round, then Niall loses and declares it's best of 3 :P Know what I mean? Or even if there was scheduled time for "random games"

Phizz

Lol. I don't mind if people want to play games I can't. Just list games that could be played at the LAN on another post (including what they need to be patched to) and then get people to list:

Games they have patched and will be playing;
Games they are willing to try but do not have installers/ patches for;
Proposed additions to the list;
Games they will happily opt out of to let time for other people to play em.

yeah there was a lot of chat last time, people complaining about the lack of coordination and the amount of time spent with no 'official' big game being up and running.
hopefully the committee can check over the thread about it from last time and take on-board the suggestions that were made. i.e. more focus on 'popular' games, less focus on weird pish that only 3 people want to play.
a lot of fuss was made at the time after the last LAN but i guess the long break between events at this time of year gets in the way.

Well I've spoken to Niall and I'm going to be running a CS:Source tournament at this LAN. Probably a 3v3, pick your own teams knockout. I'll finalize it later.

I'll look into providing an Armed Assault .iso plus crack and all the necessaries for those who wish to play.

I also have an IL2 1946 iso and crack if anyone wants to play that.

And I have Hearts Of Iron II: Doomsday but no-one would want to play that despite its amazingness.

@Phizz - if you want to gather a list of games your comp can play and that you'd like to play, I'll happily give them a bash.

There shall be a meeting to address the issues that were raised at the last LAN. At this point in time, I'm not entirely sure what the arrangement shall be, but we shall do what we can to remove the mucking about that happened last time.

More gaming ftw!!! :D

I feel that ArmA and LFS should definately be given there own "slot" so to speak. If enough people what to play a game it should be given time, we all want to have fun right?

As the guys said, I'd get pre-registered lists of interest before making an official schedule. That way people have NO excuse for not having the games they want to play installed and ready to go at start time, which is certainly my main bugbear.

define 'enough people' LFS was a joke last time, less than half the people played it and it overran its slot by more than an hour

actually larry 75% of folk wanted to play but the server can only cope with a limited feild so some couldn't join. And yeah it did overrun.

All the more reason to dedicate as little official time to it as possible. At least everyone who wants to play other games can.

I think Saturday should be something like this:

Setup-1200 CS:S Big Public Game
1200-1400 BF2
1400-1500 Unreal Tournament (??)
1500-1600 Sourceforts
1600-1700 ??
1700-1800 Dawn of War 4v4s (??)
1800-1900 Dinner
1900-2100 Source Tournament
2100-2300 BF2142 (two hours?? dedicate a slot to it?)
2300-0000 CS Tournament Final
Midnight The Hidden (??)
Midnight-on Whatever people want. Arma; LFS, Dungeon Keeper etc.

Sunday would incorporate the DoW tournament, more CSS public, more BF2 and some other stuff.

i think you need to leave a gap of maybe 15-30 mins or so between each scheduled game. this accounts for close games lasting too long, people needing to install the next game to be played, all-imprortant food+cig breaks, and generally making sure everyone knows whats going on. the 'late starts' are cumulative as someone always wants to play their favourite game for the maximum allotted time until at the end of the day everything is running hours late and half the people have made up their own new schedule instead.

also as much as its the best game ever right now , is 2142 that popular?

EDIT: also, the gaps in the schedule allow for people just playing their own smaller games, or maybe DSs or PS2 if theyre there.

Sid
12th January 2007, 19:08
Yeah, all good points Larry. Perhaps a slightly looser timetable, something like:

Saturday
Setup CS:S Big Public Game
1200 BF2
1430 Unreal Tournament (??)
1545 Sourceforts
1700 Dawn of War 4v4s (??)
1900 Source Tournament
2100 Some big game
2300 CS Tournament Final

Sunday
1300 BF2
1600 Dawn Of War Tournament
1900 Dawn of War Final
2000 Counter-Strike: Source

What's the status on the servers, Jan?

The server can run much the same as last time, just need to do a quick hard disk swap and we're away.

I am very tempted to simply reinstall windows xp on the server, copy the old configs and stuff across, and make a few slight modifications. This is due to the firewall issues we had last lan (you might remember the german guys joining our CSS server while we were playing!)
So far we have working configs for (please note, this means we have something that used to work we can start with, may not mean it'll still be ok):

Battlefield 2 (out of date, no doubt - easily solved). Working unlocks.
Battlefield 2142 (""), I reckon we can get tier 1 unlocks working easily plus earned ones.
CS:S (""), everything should work fine, just need to tweak the map list.
Hidden: Needs updating of course, worked all right last time
Sourceforts: Going to scrap the ridiculous time limits of last time, need to do a bit of work on this so we don't need to restart the entire server just to start the game.
Doom 3 co-op: should be good to go
Live for Speed: Worked last time? Some firewall issues previously, new XP install should sort that out (so yega can remotely admin it, etc)
Unreal Tournament - install, hit "run dedicated server", save web page of console commands, profit. (hopefully)

Edit by Strings:
Pause Gaming does not promote or endorse "warezing" of games, nor do we hand out free serials for them. Please do not indicate that we do so.

If anyone has any suggestions or things they need done server-wise before the lan, please please tell me now so I don't have to cram it all in during the setup evening. I hate that.

Edit AGAIN by Strings:
Guys this isn't a hard concept to understand...

after my major hardware upgrade I no longer have Unreal Tournament.
Or atleast we can finalize a list of games most likely to be played and put it online atleast a week in advance so ppl have a chance to install/get the games?
