Moving the data across PCIe is much, much higher than PCI.
Eh? Does PCIe have stilts or something.

It's just data. I mean, even if it's small packets, I find it hard to believe that it would make that much of a difference.
:sigh:

PCI Express packets have very large payload sizes, sent less frequently than PCI. This means that either a) they have to waste the remainder of the very large packet by sending only a small fraction of the data in each packet, or b) they have to bite the bullet and accept that the lag between each packet has to be accepted.
I can't remember how many times bigger PCI-E packets are in relation to PCI 32-bit ones though. but the point is valid.

Why not use audio that is 23427593274572893472198374273947289347283.2 then to add loads of other channels of audio ;) also encode everything at 96khz etc :D just to fill out those packets a bit ;)
