MB is dead. Won't boot most of the time, internal speaker doing the tune of death (i.e. my AGP slot is not working and I'm not coming out to play tune). If it does mange to boot, it crashes with in minutes. Tried different video cards with no results. Bye bye DFI Skt A, hello Conroe Duo. Shame there was nothing I could do but watch it die.

Ah well, tomorrow, the resurrection shall begin!

So sad. But from the ashes a new and better machine shall be born.

I managed to kill my brand new hardrive the other day, still need to RMA it.

Mobo is dead, long live newMobo.
Sorry to hear about that, but at least you'll get an improptu upgrade.

Do you have any idea what killed it? Power surge maybe?

It could have been but the Tagan is beasty and I have a surge protector, so I'll put it done to wear and tear. The AGP slot seemed like the main perpitrator with the video related blue screens of death and strange artifacts before games would crash. However, i've tried booting it up a few times and it even crashes in the BIOS! Must be seriously messed up.

Anyway, I'm researching my new build. Here be my current buy list.

From Scan (www.scan.co.uk)

MSI P965-PLATINUM iP965 - £93.99 (http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductInfo.asp?WebProductID=491969)
Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 OEM - £115.14 (http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductInfo.asp?WebProductID=439209)

+ VAT + Ship = £216.16

From Ock (www.overclockers.co.uk)

PowerColor ATI Radeon X1950 Pro Extreme SILENT Heatpipe 256MB - £146.86 (http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-064-PC)

CNPS9700-LED Aero Flower CPU Cooler - £45.81 (http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HS-026-ZA)
GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC6400C4 800MHz - £199.74 (http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-058-GL)

+VAT +Ship = £402.11

TOTAL = £618.27

I would buy pretty much everything from Scan but they're out of stock of a few things such as the Dominator mem I want (is cheaper than OcK) and they don't have the Zalman.

Will be building into this setup.

Hows it going? If youre gonna put her together over the weekend, do you mind if i come round and take some pictures? Thinking about writing a guide to putting a motherboard on a tray, cos i totally forgot about that technique we came up with when i was doing mine (until the fourth attempt).

And i dont really feel like dismounting my MB. Think most of the screws are cross-threaded.

Edit: technique we came up with when you were putting yours together (ages ago), forgotten when i was putting mine together (recently)

So you never had a tray that warped on you? Lucky you.

Ok, parts are ordered. ALL form blasted OCK.

MSI 975X Power Up! - (the platinum was out of stock at Scan! I should have ordered yesterday!)
Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 OEM
PowerColor ATI Radeon X1950 Pro Extreme SILENT Heatpipe 256MB
CNPS9700-LED Aero Flower CPU Cooler
GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC6400C4 800MHz

+VAT +SHIP = TOO MUCH!

It's cost me £676.16. I'm kinda pissed off. not gonna rant about it here however is it was partially my fault. All I can say is, if you see a good price for something awesome that you want, don't wait! :(

Anyway I'll have some of the parts tomorrow and rest following on Sat. If I do get them all (I bloody better seeing how much postage I've paid) then you're more than welcome to come round and participate Aldous. :) I'll be taking lots of photos too. I think this is possibly the most expensive and stressful upgrade I've ever done, it better be worth it. :)

Here are some pics illistrating the cause of my machines death.

Cap in the CPU socket popped causeing an electrical surge of some kind burning the 3.3V power lines. Poor wee thing. :(

On a happier note, here are a few pics of my shiny new Zalman.

Don't worry too much about the 3.3v scorching, that happens all the time (even on non broken boards).

Is it just the cap? Can you make out the text on the top? 104 or something?
