View Full Version : Things we most want from GUNS (besides the Games)

DAve

I was thinking of how to make your lives better at the LAN / offline.

So far I've come up with:

Web hosting. Want your files from all the one place, sure. - £60 ish
Kettle. Cups of coffee and tea on tap. - £10
<strike>Blackjack and hookers</strike> See Sideshow for poker :)
spare mouse / keyboard. People forget things - £10
Munchies - food for the LAN. £varies

Anything else you chaps want?

Web Hosting for patches, maps, cfgs etc is a cool idea.

Coffee on tap is a great idea also.

Poker yep.

Spare mouse/keyboard... not too sure about this one. Might encourage people to be lazy and just rely on GUNS to supply them with equipment.

Mumchies... definitely :)

This might be a dumb question... but do you run something like Vent or Teamspeak on the server?

Bluepixie
26th August 2005, 15:19
Teamspeak is a good idea. Definately for Ghost Recon and Raven Shield. However, if we're playing as two opposing teams, we would need two servers...suppose that's not really a problem.

Other things I would like to see.

LAN

1. "Borrow" the white board from the Williams room and use it as a planning board for game times/break times.

2. Waitress serving cocktails and other refreshments

3. A projector showing the leading player during games.

Maybe not the last 2. :P

But having some kind of notice board could v.handy. Erm, and a kettle would rock, big time. No mircowave though, I'm not having Phizz taking mircowavable burger thingys. Would just be wrong.
As far as munchies go, I think that it would be better if we just take our own stuff. People like eating/drinking different things and it would just be extra hassle.

Would these extra things be coming out of the GUNS accounts? What about setting up our own server?

CaNNoN_FoDDa
26th August 2005, 15:40
we could do the muchies thing as a joint order from tesco online. that would save some hassle, no? then we would have one account and everybody would pay what they owed to the account holder..

DAve
26th August 2005, 17:01
teamspeak is a great idea. Will look into it at home. Could easily serve two or more chats / fireteams on the file server.

Tesco deliveries are another great idea :)
"3 cooked chickens, 24 crates of beer and a some value crisps please."

Poaching the whiteboard. Hmm. Perhaps a A1 pad of our own?
Would be very useful for organising . keeping track of scores / gloating over hard-won victories :)

I just said Teamspeak so youd get the right idea heh. In reality, avoid Teamspeak. Teamspeak 2 is meant to be an improvement.. but its not :?

The one you want is Ventrilo. Same VoIP style except less system intensive and just clearer IMO.

And you wont need two servers. Ventrilo when its in its server mode can have as many "channels" as you like. So you could have two teams on different channels playing CS:S. 2 people in a Starcraft channel, two playing Q3 and perhaps one guy by himself singing.

In my clan for example we have a public channel and a match channel. Nice and simple.

I can get all the software for that if you want, fairly easy to set up. :)

Sweet. I'm all for easy, simple solutions. I was going to try Teamspeak, but will leave that as a backup. Ventrilo sounds much nicer.

I've got the bare bones of the game scheduler written (hereafter known as GameCall); today was a productive Monday at work :)

It looks like this:

At the LAN, it'd be nice if we could get it set up on one of DAve's servers, with some kind of monitor output, preferably an easily visible one. It's 640x480, so it can display on a TV, if someone has a TV out. And a TV.

I'm not worried about losing money, I can do that spectacularly well. I'm upset that the time/money investment made to my computer is going to waste. My computer might start to resent me, like my last one did and stop working. That would be bad. Everyone knows that you had to talk your Spectrum/BBC/Other tape loader to load the new game you bought while offering your sisters soul to a relevant deity and chanting praise to the immortal error #40 code god (unexpected load error).

I made that last part up BTW. I needed a good ending and in actual fact I never really used tapes cos my dad nicked a floppy drive for our BBC from work so I didn't have to worry about the volume being to high/low or some equal crap. But I do remember having to think aclming thoughts to get the BBC to work properly. :)

Jut found out that Teamspeak (http://www.gentoo-portage.com/media-sound/teamspeak2-server-bin) is found on the gentoo portage page. (portage is the general installer and compiler for gentoo linux). Therefore, this weekend I'll try and get it on the linux server and host a server internally in a trial run for the next LAN.

I don't dispute there are better progs than teamspeak out there, but TS is easy and simple to set up on gentoo. I'll try that at the LAN (unless there are any better and just-as-easy alternatives) and if it sucks, we can try something else.

Two things. One minor and one a serious concern.

Minor:

What version of Vent is it? Just so I can replace the one Im using atm :)

Serious:

Now look at my forum ranking. Normally I wouldnt care.. but youve actually ranked a five-seven higher than the Mac10! And who knows what else.

So.

The challenge is, you give me a weapon. ANYTHING save a knife... against a five-seven. I guarantee I will take you down. Damn five-seven.

Sideshow
21st September 2005, 01:14
Just because he did a shit in the oven is no reason to talk it. The only reason a mac 10 is ranked higher than the knife is because there is the slim chance, however improbable, that you'll get a kill with it outside melee range.

The rankings:

# (000) Glock
# (010) DualElites
# (020) Knife
# (030) Scout
# (040) MAC-10
# (050) P228
# (060) Five-Seven
# (070) USP
# (080) Shotgun
# (090) UMP
# (100) TMP
# (110) P90
# (120) MP5
# (135) Deagle
# (150) Galil
# (170) FAMAS
# (190) Autoshot
# (210) Autosniper
# (235) PARA
# (260) AWP
# (290) STEYR
# (320) Commando
# (365) M4A1/AK-47

Ranked in general power/usefulness. Looking at it, I think the only weapon unduly affected by my personal bias is the Scout, which shold probably be a bit higher... I'll stand by the rest though. Cost is factored into the equation - obviously the five seven is better than the USP, but the USP is free.

I foresee... a T v's CT, Mac10 v's five seven showdown. Shotgun CT! All we have to do is make sure we fight them more than 10 feet away, and they can't win! :)

Righty just played a wee demo on my laptop and researched.

Mac10 is practically identical to the TMP (it aint a shotgun, thats the M3). Difference is the Mac10 has 20 less ammo, but is more powerful.

Five-Seven indeed is the most accurate pistol in the game, it carries 20 rounds and it is weaker than slapping the Terrorist with a dead fish.

You can check up on those facts. But the Mac10 is definitely an SMG matey. Yega has to get at least 6 headshots in a row I think
