Ok, for my new computer do I either go for:
Athlon X2
Using this I can in the future add crossfire to it and run two graphics cards - more power, plus the possible ability to use one as a physics card.
Intel Core 2 Duo
I lose the ability to have crossfire, but on the other hand I can overclock by up to 1ghz.
What would you choose, and why?

I would go with an athlon, I've never had a good gaming experience on an intel so from a personal perspective athlons just feel better.
Also Intel are like crazy dominatrixes with many companies, beating them up and such..
So pick up a relatively cheap athlon for now, should get you by for the moment and you can save up for something brand spanking new next year or somesuch.

My computer is dead, so it's all or nothing I'm afraid.

The Intel Core 2 Duo without a doubt - will outperform anything AMD can throw at it, for the moment.
A conroe E6600 in one of the Asus P5B motherboards and you'll be laughing.
Let me know your budget and I'll put a few ideas together.

If you have a look at my other thread you'll see the sort of set-up I'm aiming for.
Either that, or the Comedy option (http://tomshardware.co.uk/2006/05/10/dual_41_ghz_cores_uk/index.html)

Intel Core 2 DUO E6600 Retail
Asus P5B Deluxe
GeIL 2GB PC6400
£550
Then your choice of graphics card, either a 7900GT/GTX or a X1900.
What was your old system and what went wrong with it, out of interest?

The AGP graphics card exploded.
These motherboards support conroe and crossfire - whats it to be?
Asus P5W DH Deluxe WiFi
DFI Infinity 975X
MSI 975X Platinum PowerUP

What about the Asus P5WD2-E Premium? It seems pretty much the same, minus wireless.

I'm not actually sure if the P5WD2-E is Core2 Duo capable despite it being a 775 motherboard. If you can afford the cost of the P5W DH Deluxe, I'd go for it.

the P5W, is that the board everyone says is the best overclocking board currently available?

Intel > AMD.
This is a no-brainer.
