View Full Version : New/Addtional Name for the society

Due to the change of commitie and other situations the website shall be getting moved to a different domain. I see this as a good time to possibly give a new name or addtional name to the society. It's only fair if the society gives some suggetions for this name, see what you guys want!
If you could use UKreg (http://www.ukreg.com/) to check that the name could be used for our domain name as well that would be great. Once we have a good selection of names we shall do a poll. Anything you can think of!
Cheers :D

I've had a good long think about this, (can't work as some of the systems have been declared unavailbale for a while).
And to be perfectly honest, I'm happy with GUNS. It follows the classic convention of utilising the University's initials in conjunction with our own.
And the argument that \"we dont always play FPS games\" is sorta valid, but most games we do play are gun related anyway.
But yeh, in a nut shell, I'm happy with GUNS. We will just have to come up with a good domain name to utilise it.

These are just some preliminary ideas. What sort of theme were you wanting to say with the name? Are we lan gamers, game enthusiasts, geeky gamers?

GravgunGaming.com
can use a monitor getting flug (maybe hitting a character?)
or maybe just GravGaming.com
i quite like it. :D
It's a good representation for us I think.

Well given my habbit of discovering flight is only fleeting due to gravity when blown sky high by an artillery strike in BF2. I would say grav in the title is appropriate.

I couldn't really find any I liked that weren't already taken. Nearest I got was ClickBoomPlay.com
I do have some suggestions though:
.com : has to be .com. Nothing else is as easily memorable - if you have co.uk, or anything else, people need to remember that extension. With .com all they have to remember is the name.
Memorable (obviously), and easy to spell. Shorter is better. Conjunctions of 1 syllable words work well, but most will be taken. No words which have multiple spellings.
No hyphens. No puncuation save '.'s Having 'and' or 'the' in the middle is not good (they tends to get lost in the other words)
While it is tempting to go for in-joke names (like WASD.com, BornToFrag.com, BOOMHeadshot.com) which we gamers will get, it's probably not a good idea if we want to attract people who are not already into lanning. The emphasis should be on Games / Playing / Fun.

It's a great name, but it requires having played HL2. If we've got HL virgins, and they see the name, are they going to link that with general playing computers?
I completely agree with the emphasis on games, playing & fun.

Our demographic:
18-25 Year Old
Student or ex student at Higher education
Has/does/wants to play games on a regular basis
Owns thier own computer but is not nessesarily computer literate
Knows what the internet is
How can the above be true and NOT know what Half Life is? If the above is true and they _don't_ know Half Life then at least they will be interested and when they _do_ find out we will have a surefire follower.
The Demographic we want:
Same as above but hasn't played games or at least not online but WANTS to or would enjoy doing so.
Neither of these types are going to get any 'in' jokes so we cannot cater to them in all forms of club branding. They are more likely to be attracted by seeing that it is popular and good fun at a LAN.

I see what you're saying, and it suppose it may be a little ambiguous for some people. However, if the name and logo are well designed this shouldn't be a problem. Was thinking along the lines of a monitor being thrown (aka the toilet kill icon from HL2DM) maybe with a creature/person being hit by it in comedy/slapstick style. I think this would make the image have the following qualities.
1. HL2 reference shows that we are geeky/into gaming
2. Amusing image implies fun
3. Grav(gun) reference also implies fun, linking in with people experiences of the gravgun. Everyone that's used it has found it funny at some point!
4. Monitor in the logo strengthens PC type gaming as primary society function.
5. Name design will probably use a retro looking font (or original design, which I'm working on) to add more of a gaming look.
Here are some ideas of what I mean for the Logo, just made these just now. The monster wasn’t drawn by me, that’s one of my sister's doodles so it wasn’t drawn for this situation, just trying different ideas.
1. Basic idea
http://img224.imageshack.us/img224/3161/gravgaminglogoname3kb.th.jpg (http://img224.imageshack.us/my.php?image=gravgaminglogoname3kb.jpg)
2. With creature :)

The font I chose for the name was just for effect, I would try and make an original font if we go ahead with it.
Suggestions and input please! :D

Firstly, thanks to all that came along yesterday. The committee got a lot of things sorted (Strings should have the minutes up soon) and major progress was made with the new name for the society.
It came down to a choice,
- Game and Munch
- Munchgaming
After everybody had their say we had 4 votes for Game and Munch, and 5 for Munchgaming, my vote now becoming the tie breaker effectively. Both are very good and I really didn’t wish to choose at the time, however, I chose Game and Munch. On reflection though I feel that Munchgaming could be better.
I’m not changing my mind but before anything is finalised I must do some work with my sister on designs for the logo etc. If we find that Munchgaming or anyother ideas are better during the actual art and design stage I will reconsider.
All members shall be informed if any changes that are made and a meeting with the committee shall have to take place for the final decision. Hopefully, the designs, name and website shall finished by the end of July.
Thanks for all of the input!

To be fair, I announced to the society that this issue was going to be addressed at the next meeting. Members that didn't/couldn't attend the meeting are more than welcome to suggest other ideas. The name will not be finalised until the end of July I reckon so there it still plenty time for more input. My last comment was not a jest, there is still plenty of time for more input.

The most important part of that meeting was to get some new ideas. I think if members still want to suggest things, I think it's only fair that we take it into account.
I'm not a huge fan of the "game and munch" or the "munchgaming". It has "game" in it, but not really anything else.
I reserve my right to change my mind once I've seen some designs and talked to everyone in the pub.
Can the secretary post the minutes of the meeting up on the forum / wiki when he gets the time please?
It would be good to know what actually happened at the meeting.

hands up those who think that a creative think tank be setup for discussing the proposal of the concept of having a name change, then we can set up a committee for colour evaluation and lighting. Of course we will need to hire artists and ex drug addicts, writters and possibly a mime to ensure the full cultural heritage is brought to the fore in the symbol for the concept of the name change that is to be proposed?
Or how 'bout we stick with the vote or we will never get anywhere!
Pixie, quit fannying about and just fucking choose what you like and go with it, you have shown a contempt for the vote since it happened so I see no reason that you open it up to our opinion considering that the only one that really matters is that your idea be chosen!
I do not intend ANY malice in this post this is observation. I think the name needs to be changed, I have given reason for why and the direction it should go IMO. In the majority the group agrees so I REALLY do not care what you pick so long as it is within that remit. That and you do it soon so the rest of the stuff can be organised, you DO NOT want this dragging any longer than it has.
PS to all those other folk that read this, Niall is away at the moment so I could't tell him this to his face. Unless I phoned him, which I am lothe to do.
Where are Shonas and your sketches? I'd far rather pick a logo than a name at this stage.

Niall: OK guys, we're gonna vote on a name.
Me: Why don't we wait until the next lan, and get ideas/opinions from everybody?
Niall: No, I want it done before the next lan. That's what this meeting is for - to pick a name.
Names suggested. Votes counted. Name picked. Next day: I'm not so sure about the name...

Good point.
Names suggested. Votes counted. Name picked. Next day: I'm not so sure about the name...
Good grief.
OK, the general consensus is we need a new name. I think we should take time to choose a really good name for the club. I don't care what that is *. Not everyone will agree either. It's better to have a healthy debate about the name rather than stick with munchgaming (I just don't like that name, sorry everyone).
* (ok, this is a little white lie, I do care what the name is)
its a good simple easy name. the connotations; a monster 'paws' and 'pause' which is kinda relevant, ya kno, play pause, pause a game, i dunno but theres something there. fact is, pausegaming is basically "easy to remember word" + "what we do". No GUNS to be confused with rifle club, and no lame awkward pun like 'Game and Munch'.
So, heres the crack. Seeing as everyone is so dormant on the forums recently, there will be no "do you like this? vote yes no?" shite. But instead, this name and logo* will go ahead UNLESS there is any strong objections. Like in a marriage.
*theres another cooler logo, merely a 'pause' symbol before the word gaming in a cool font. Looks good. Theres a few logo idea's so whatever, setting the name is more important now.

The beauty about these designs is they are not mutually exclusive.
Multiple designs over many posters will hopefully appeal to different people.
Also, it depends what they look like in print too. The plastic design might not look good as good in print as I think it does on screen.
I agree though, a hand crafted piece of artwork can be much more appealing than a CG drawing (in general).

I agree. Comments have already shown that people prefer slightly different looks. I suppose if we had a selection of paws to use but had the same base design (i.e. the boxed, borderless, wriggly frame design etc) and use the same font (design) for the text, it would work. Only problem is if people get confused and maybe don't recognise that they are all from the same group. It's unlikely, but we don't want to confuse people! However, seeing as we are going to be called PauseGaming and playing on the "paws" tie-in theme, there is no reason to not have "multiple" paw types. Maybe it would represent that many different people like going to our LAN's or something.....I shall have a play around with it. I really appreciate your comments, I wouldn’t have tried some of these designs if it weren’t for you guys! :D Will get some more designs done and up tomorrow. As they say, watch this space.....

What I think would be a powerful campaign:
Just put up the symbol on a poster. Put it everywhere, multiple designs if you like. If you're feeling brave, put up a web address too (of a "coming soon: Pause" subsite / extra domain. Don't tell people what it is. The word will spread through viral marketing. We know enough people on GUST and associated student media outlets to really cause a WTF effect.
Thoughts?
(this is because the entire reason I came to lan games was just a quake II symbol on a poster and a web address. Such a simple idea entirely hooked me.)

Sounds like a good idea with just the logo - we could register www.whatispause.com and then just spam the claw logo everywhere. If we could get GUST to have the red claw appear occasionally on the TV station it would be amazing.
Failing that, if we just get lots of posters up before freshers week starts, put some in the halls and some around where the new students will see them.

I think pavement graffiti is legal(ish), so you could spraypaint pawprints with pauses and maybe put a /url (small) next to them, or have them leading to a poster?
Remember though that fly-posting is illegal and will get you fined. Clubs etc can afford to spend the money, but we dont steal money from drunk peeps and alcoholics, so we cant.
Im not sure if the police would bother to check the /url when looking for peeps to fine. Think they might restrict themselves to on-the-spot fines.
Edit:
Yeah, was just having a quick look for stuff on what the law is on graffiti in glasgow (it's monday and im at work, what do they expect me to do?) but didnt have much luck. Think if we use something non-permanent, like chalk or water-based paint, we're much less likely to get prosecuted, etc.
If anybody cares.
Yeah! thats a well cool idea! pld

Sounds like a good idea. I currently arranging stuff for freshers week at the moment and pulling up a final design for the logo. I'm also looking for the best place for us to move our website to. I think we could start our advertising in September.

Moving closer to a final design. Went through over a 1000 fonts tonight, found some really good ones. Here is an idea of what I'm thinkin.
Note the longer claws.

In order to move to the new server, we're gona have to shut everything down (so we don't lose any of you peeps' valuable posts). Some time in the near future (within a fortnight probably) all the DBs are going to go dead. That is, this forum, the wiki and the gallery. A day or so later they should be back up at their new home.
So, if the site doesn't work for you sometime soon, you'll know why.

Excellent.
That goes for both the logo and for what Sideshow said.
Though I'm not sure about having the light that brightly in the middle. Could you turn down the intensity a little?

It'd look better if the light only reflected off the paw, and the red was completely matte.

I hope that someone would send out an email to the users telling htem of the change. Also a re-direct on the page(s) would be nice :)

Just my own opinion but I'm not too keen on the lighter spot in the middle - why not just have the claw and background as matte?

Indeed! I just threw the lighting effect on there, it looks a little naff I must admit. Here be a revised version.

T-shirts seems like an awesome idea as well... they come in XXXL right? :)

Just been looking around various places for printing. Found a good place called IndigoClothing (http://www.indigoclothing.com/).
I've asked them for a quote, shall see what they say. From what I can tell from the pricing I think it could cost about £7 a T-shirt. They charge extra per colour though (screen printing needs a sperate mask for each colour) so a limited colour choice is best. As far as custom T-shirts go, from what I can tell from online printing places, it costs a fair bit more to get a one off T-shirt (as you would expect). I'm not saying you can't have custom T-shirts but we definately can't get any kind of discount on a bunch of custom designs. I think it would be best if we go for a set design. Get 30 of say black T-shirt with red print or white T with black print in different sizes. Most of the places I know of in Glasgow only do silk printing which is a bit kack, but I'm going to search for more local places, see what they offer. I'm still waiting for Strings to get back to me (he has a cousin that does T-shirt printing) which might be cheaper.

Square, non-shiny here.
Just read the entire thread having not visited the forum in weeks, nice to see some coherent direction. Pause gaming does the job and the final design is splendid.
Same kind of thing worked a treat with AIESEC - "Who is the blue man?" - Im led to believe the initial fresher’s inundation really worked. Image association is a powerful thing.

Sounds like a good idea with just the logo - we could register www.whatispause.com and then just spam the claw logo everywhere.
OK - do we have any volunteers for registering the website and making an enigmatic campaign - Ideally someone on the committee could co-ordinate us into a well-formed viral marketing team.
I'm up for it - I've not got a huge amount of time - but I can help where I can.
(we can use a section of the forums for some super-secret pause planning too)
I'm all excited now :D

Excellent! Sounds good to me! :D
I'm very excited about getting T-shirts, but I need to know numbers as it's going to be v.expensive. I got the quote back from Indigo, looks like it's going to cost round about £11.70 a shirt for an order of 30 shirts. I would be keen to sell them at about £15 (would that be too much?) so we would make a little money for the club as well. I shall make a new thread and wiki page for people to put in orders for T-shirts.
whatispausegaming.com is a great idea! I suppose I could get the domain and build it at the same time as the main site. I'm not sure how much time I have myself for doing all of this though.
Also! I have been talking to SPC Andy about badges. Was thinking of something like this
http://img85.imageshack.us/img85/1628/pinbadgeco3.jpg
Would get 100 of them. People could get them with membership! :D

Yeah, been trying to track down a job since I got back from Canada, sorry if I've seemed distant or haven't been getting involved enough guys, trying to get everything sorted out.
Plus I've been at my mum's for a week or so now (sending off application forms from Mid Argyll ftw) and the only time I really get to hop on her computer is late at night.
Should be heading back down to Glasgow sometime this week, and possibly starting a technical support course with Stow, so who knows I may even understand how these "com-pew-turs" work at some point.
The designs and stuff are all looking great, and I'll probably pick up a Tshirt at some point and I'll help out with freshers fair and stuff in anyway that I can, if there's spare room at the next Home-based LAN I might be a late sign-up (despite telling Pixie that I almost certainly wouldn't make it), but everything is hinging on what happens with Stow and similar nonsense.
Again, sorry if I've been a bit silent, uninvolved or unfriendly guys.

And for the attention of Mr Pixie, Grant should be getting back to me sometime soon matey.
Even if he can't do anything at a very cheap price, i'm still gonna get him to make me a dwarven wizard T-Shirt. With a big muddy pausegaming logo on the back :)

Think there are prolly some (http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=custom+fabric+badges+uk&meta=) in the uk, but i didnt see any with price lists.
