Hi, I'm from SLUGS, Sheffield University's LAN Gaming Society. Recently we've been looking into new ways of introducing a more competitive aspect to our society both online and at LAN parties. We decided that the best way to approach this would be to set up a websites for societies to come together from around the UK so we've created the websites www.ugame.co.uk and www.ugaming.co.uk for the “British Universities Gaming Group. We are currently looking into organising ladders / tournaments / leagues on-line for university gaming societies from around Britain. The ultimate goal would be to have a huge LAN organised at some point that would act as the British University Finals where every university would come along and we'd have a huge competition in a broad spectrum of games.

Right now we've only got a forum going on the website but hopefully we can get a couple of friendly matches going over the summer with a view to kicking the whole thing off for the start of term next year (our web master is going to do a proper job of the website over the summer when he has more time). We would really appreciate you heading over to the forums and taking part in the discussions so we can get a strong community going. We've linked to all your websites on the front page and we'd be really appreciative if you could link to us from your site too.

What we're proposing for the time being is that you elect two people from your society to be part of the committee for BUGG, just give us a shout on the forum and we'll add you to the committee group on the forum. We want to try and involve as many universities in the decision and ideas process, while not making it too congested.

We've already had a fair bit of interest from universities in Greenwich, Bristol, and York and had a brief friendly bit of CS:S earlier as a group.
Hopefully this should turn out to be something fun we can all get involved in.

Thanks a lot,

[SLUGS] D3lta

Sounds splendid D3lta.

GUNS have considered a multi-uni lan in Scotland, nothing has come of it so far - but the whole concept is great. Considering so many courses are geared towards technology, the combination of computing and an academic community is Capital. (the grey fox – I salute you).

Signing up now.

Sounds like an excellent idea.

Have you considered doing Uni-vs-Uni matches, playing over the Internet? I think it'd be particularly fun if we had coinciding LAN dates, where a team from one university can have a match against another university.

When we get the Internet access issues sorted, we will have sub-10ms pings between most educational institutions in the UK. Plus having players from other Universities coming to visit for finals (or just matches, if we decide to play offline-only) sounds like an amazing idea.

I'd be interested in getting involved, particularly with making these events work technically.

lets keep that spirit up, to be honest setup day for our lans is a bit like christmas. Unpacking all the wires setting up the servers, putting the unrully children to bed. Wake up and it's gaming time!!!

Get your asses on the forums guys.

Already had a few games of CSS with some of the guys on it. Pretty decent chaps all in all. Although sometimes a tad touchy about the use of a certain scoped weapon...
