I think that at some future lan we should set one day aside to have some kind of iron-man tournament. We play selected genre games all day, and have a point system - at the end of the day we award prizes to Gold, Silver and Bronze. Quick short list of events (off the top of my head):

UT2003 or UT2K4
Q3 or Q4
DoW
Starcraft
CS
CS:S (maybe only one of these two?)
Live for Speed
Beat em up?

any thoughts?

Guilty Gear is the most crazy as awesome fast styled beat-em up there is!
So how bout it?

Yeah, why not?

THanks for volunteering to organise it :D

I think we definately need everyone to vote on this one. Generally people are only going to pick games they are good at, which makes sense but we need to be sensible. A competitive challange like this needs a good range of styles for it to be any fun and NO consoles. We don't all have them so it wouldn't be fair. Would be not too disimilar to putting a 100m sprinter into a 1000m race, they just arn't trained for that sort of gig. :?

Hey, let the votes land where they will, and stop pushing your Guilty gear agenda. If the majority want Soul Calibur or Tekken, that's what we play. If the majority want Guily Gear we play that. Assuming the majority even want to play a beatemup.

Comments on Ru's votes:

(a) Goldeneye is Deathmatch FPS, not Misc
(b) Two votes per section, beyatch!

I apologise. it was a cheeky add at the end there that i hoped would not be noticed but would sub-consiously make its way into people heads so that they start saying, "how bout goldeneye". hehehh

I'm not saying you can't vote for it - you can. In the Deathmatch FPS section.

will there be any prize for this event? or just for fun?

A rough idea of a scoring mechanism:

Deathmatch:
GP scoring (First gets 10, second 8, etc). may require some math to collate scores over multiple rounds, but should be fairly straightforward.

Team FPS:
Play however many rounds. Afterwards, give each player points equal to the number of wins their team scored. Modify these points by (kills-deaths)/10. Finally, find highest scoring player, work out his score ratio with 10, then modify everyones score by the same ratio.

RTS:
Play 3 rounds of 1v1 swiss, with a top 8 knockout final. 1st, 2nd are obvious, 3rd and 4th reached by playoff concurrent with final. 6th-8th can either be worked out via number of points scored in their last round (most RTS will give players points at the end of the game), or just tie them all for 6th.

Misc:
Racing game, make the race duration approx 1hr, and use GP scores.
Beatemp up: Straight knockout tourny, work out top 8 like in RTS.

I'd suggest we use Day 1 for this, after we get late nights sorted, so we have a run on, and maximum turn-out.

The counter-strike scoring for each individual will be really hard to judge fairly.

Again, please only post votes here. Post any comments in the Ironman Talk thread. Can you move this, yours and Mogwai's comments into that thread please?

A rough idea of a scoring mechanism:

Deathmatch: Great.

Team FPS: I can live with that too

RTS:
Play 3 rounds of 1v1 swiss...
DoW rounds last ~1 hour anyway. I think this will be a huge time-sink. Might have to narrow it down to a game of 30 minutes, with the winner being the highest score.

Misc:
Racing game: 1 hour racing? Fantastic :D

RTS shouldn't take more than 20 mins a round 1v1. If games go long we can just call them ties - swiss suports tied rounds.

Having it one day is a good idea, may i suggest we keep the game list small, so we can get it finish on one day :). may be have one game pure gender? and get a list up, and let people vote for what game they want for each type of game. I can only think of RTS , FPS , beatem up and sims. As you know organising a tourney for each type of game is very time consuming, so i suggest 4 / 5 should be max :)

RTS - Starcraft:Broodwar
FPS - CS 1.6 / GOTY UT
Beatem up- King of fighter / street fighter?
Sims - live for speed should be good :)

For beat em up i think street fighter will be the best choice, cos everyone knows about it ^^

Also for Fps, i think we should forcus on 1v1 type of games, so the scoring system will be fair, as someone suggested it would be hard to calculate the point in CS, if we play in teams. Good exmple of this would be Q3 / UT.

Unless, we spirit the lan party into 2/3/4 groups, and each group send out a players/team for the game ??, then in that case, the scoring systems will be on each groups rather than a singler player, also it would be much easier when we play team games.

Or you guys would rather prefer to workout an overall champ instead :)??

Yeah I would definitely keep it a one day event, perhaps on the Sunday though. This might allow people to sign up on the Saturday and organise the names/ladder accordingly for the following day (im led to believe numbers are hard to predict before the Saturday)
- But then again Sundays are generally sluggish, and may not work.

People do not always take well to being told what to do. ie. join this game at that time. Especially if there are gaps between games/rounds, where most will load up another game or app of some sort.
- as was much the case with the cs tourney attempt a few months back.

It wont be too bad with games that host all players at once - like cs and sims - but the 1v1 scenarios will need more planning. I would restrict each game to fairly short, to keep interest high, and idle time low.

may be for a 3 day lan if is possible after the exams? I am sure everyone will be free then ;).

Sign up on friday, and then get it going on sat ?? As for sunday, i don't think that's a pretty good idea, alot of people leave early :(....
