there are nice things about this game, absolutely, but then, there are some bad things. I can live with bad things in a game. Really, I can. I just dont want to in this instance because they have let the console version affect the PC version.
I defy you to tell me that the new interface is not designed for xbox users? I equally ask that you defend the desicion to make plot NPCs unkillable. (I have a screenshot of a guy with 15 arrows in him saying he is 'unconcious'). Now granted I didn't know he was a plot device when I broke into his house, and indeed was still unaware of it as I stood on his bedside table and fired an arrow into his left eardrum. However, giving me the freedom to do what I did and then take it away from is somewhat frustrating. I'd have preferd it to just have killed him and be done with it. Lets face it, we are all big boys now we should be allowed to make mistakes. It's not like there wasn't a save game at the beginning of my 'break and entry' routine.
However, it looks great, the plot is interesting, the world is FANTASTICLY realised. There is little to flaw the premis. The execution just strikes as a little to much leaning on the 'make sure it's ok for the console boys' because the PC crowd will play it anyway.
This is a preemptive for stringss praise of the game. Justified praise is fine but I wanted to make sure that you all know that there are some things that will make you cringe in this game and the most obvious one is the interface.
Oh, it looks great on my machine at 800*600 so could you post some in game screenies strings, just so I know what it _should_ look like. :)

Chiming in to agree with Yega. In fact, this is going to be my bitch post, where I bitch about the game and don't offer any balancing factors, because Strings is going to do that anyway :)
Things that have pissed me off so far, in no particular order:
You can't un-nock arrows from your bow. Once the arrow is on the string, you have to shoot it. This is dumb.
There's a bit where you need to escort a guy cross-country. You have a horse and he doesn't. There will be no sharing of horse! (I did this wuest before I worked out the fast-travel thing. It was tedious. Gallop-wait-gallop-wait-gallop...)
A little later there's a bit where you have two companions, and all three of you have horses. One of my companions was refusing to mount up, so I got down to talk to him (assuming he needed to say something before we departed). I misclicked, and activted his horse instead. This made me get onto his horse, which was followed by my immediate death as my two companions branded me thief and executed me.
Directed to sit down next to someone in an inn, in which I had already bought a room, I rather foolishly picked up a radish which was sitting on the table in front of me. Thief!
The AI is appalling. Bad guys get hung up on walls, or just stand there while you kill their friends. You won't mind this though, in fact you'll like it. It makes killing them easier.
Don't go a thief. It sounds cool, sneaking around, getting backstab multipliers, and it works, right up until you have to fight more than one opponent. Then you are boned.
The freeform nature of the game is good, except I have yet to find a time critical quest. One quest I am half way through is very combat intensive (more so than the rest of this combat intensive game), and is in fact too much for me. So I left it - I left a guy I'm fighting a horde of demons with, and just went off to do other stuff. He's still standing in a castle, waiting for me to return so we can renew our assault. No pressure.
You can't smash open boxes. You can't pick up small jewellry boxes which would easily fit inside your palm. YOU MUST PICK THE LOCK!!! I have no idea what fighters are supposed to do... IN Nethack you can always #Kick
The combat system is pretty sucky. I just had to fight three people at once (because of a very scripted quest, which was jarringly bad), and it's pretty impossible for a lowly thief like me to do that. If they all huddle together, there will always be at least one of them blocking, which means I can't hit *anyone*. The other two can hit me though...
The port from console is incredibly lazy. The interface is sucky - two console UI things combine to make it tedious as hell - there are no keyboard shortcuts, and there are way to many confirm Yes/No dialogs. Yes, that's right - you want to do something, and it says Are you sure?, and you can't hit Y, N, Esc : none of them do anything. You have to CLICK.
Has anyone worked out the pattern for picking up multiple instances of an item? Sometimes I'll go to pluck my arrows out, and get them all at once. Sometimes I get one arrow for each click, and sometimes I click once and get a pop-up asking me how many arrows I want... I can't see a pattern which determines what one of these things it will do.
I'm not sure about this, but it seems to be happening: the bad guys get tougher as you level up. No, I don't mean you fight tougher bad guys later, I mean if you go back to the first dungeon, it will have repopulated with bandits, but they'll be tougher and better equipped, to match you. Which completely defeats the point of levelling up. I want one hit kills on stupid bandits, not have to fight them *again*. I hope I'm wrong, or it's going to be an incredibly flat playing experience.
You can't hotkey item set, or outfits. You can't try on outfits before you buy them either. This means you find yourself loathe to try out new clothes; it's so much hassle putting it on, then putting your old stuff back.
Oh, and it crashes to desktop occasionaly. And hangs every time I go through Anvil's South Gate.
Meh, this game pisses me off. It's definitely not worth more than 90%, maybe not even 80%. Excuse me now, I have to go play it some more. I have to go to work through the week, you see, and that means I only have about 5 hours of Oblivion time a day.

see, iains opinion is well justified and i agree with most of what he says, the only difference being that I've not completed Morrowind yet and to be honest I prefer Morrowind to this. The radient AI should be a triumph but it is let down like Iain says by poor pathfinding and combat awareness. I do however, like sitting in the forest killing and eating the occasional deer and chasing off the odd wolf/bandit. It is very peacefull, I wonder if I wait long enough the deer will start mating and then I can eat some young and tender meat... (the kind of posabilites I was hoping for in this game and STALKER had damn well better produce)
Closing thought before trying, again, to get into the game:
Have you seen a great console/PC title?
Good, yes. Great, no.

As the swelling population of Tamriel, the game's fictional realm, shows, the lag in Oblivion's release hasn't dampened enthusiasm for the critically acclaimed game, which is currently the top-rated 360 and PC title on both Metacritic.com and GameRankings.com. Today, its developer, Bethesda Softworks, announced that it has shipped more than 1.7 million copies of Oblivion since its release on March 20. Citing figures from industry trade group NPD Funworld, Bethesda boasted that Oblivion has been the fastest-selling 360 game to date. On the PC side, it accounted for 13 percent of all Windows games sold during its first week of release.

Im about 4 hours in. Just been wandering about getting my bearings. Im really struggling to accumulate a decent amount of cash, and the experience to level up. Im getting slaughtered at the first gate at kvatch.
Looting ruins and the arena has made up my pitiful 600 odd gold at the moment.
Any suggestions, tips etc?
best source of income is def exploring and looting shit loads of caves, mines, ruins and forts. Each one gives you around 500-1000 gold, I have almost 100 grand now, WELL CHUFTED! Dont worry bout Kvatch though, do lots of sidequests before going there, theres actualy no rush. Beware though, enemys do level up with you, as do your prizes. (finger of the mountain spell for level 12 or so, 70pts of damage, 10ft area, 150 spell cost, or something like that. for a level 32 player, ahem iain, it does 200pts damage 10ftarea, spell cost : 3817!!) hahaha!

Also once you're in the thieves guild just randomly rob people and you'll know where a fence is anyway. =D

Oblivion Tips & Tricks
I've been playing Oblivion for a quite a bit recently and i thought it was about time i put up some bits of sound advice, most will be known by those already playing i guess, but it'll be handy for those just starting.
If you want +5 to the your three desired stats for each level up you have to make sure you can manipulate your major skills so that you can choose when you want to level up. 10 major skill increases result in a level up, and when you do, the bonuses available to your stats are a reflection of how much you used the corresponding skills. For example, Heavy Armor, Armorer and Block all contribute to Endurance. So, if youwant your endurance to go up by +5 the next time you level up, you must get at least 10 levels up in Heavy Armor, Armorer and Block before you do. So basically, the key is to choose major skills that you wont be using, or at least you will be but in measured amounts that you can control, (like alteration, mysticism, alchemy). And only level up once you have 10 skill increases in the three stats you desire.
Guilds : As Strings said, join a guild! join as many as you want, however, note that the Dark Brotherhood and Thieves Guild missions will credit you with Infamy, oppose to most other quests that make you more famous. As far as i know, its NOT good to be more infamous than famous, do you get kicked out of the lawful guilds? Something like that anyway. Yeah, so, Guilds are quests on a plate. I found the Mages & Thieves Guild to be most fun. There are smaller guilds/factions, such as the vampire hunters that will find you in the temple district if you've killed a vampire before. Once part of them, they will pay 250gold for each vampire dust, so STOP selling them for 50gold to shopkeeps now!
Guilds, Arena, they'll put some gold in your pocket, but looting and selling is by far the most profitable method in the game. In Ayleid Ruins you will find lots of Welkynd Stones. These recharge your magicka, and weigh only 1 for a sell cost of 50. So, pretty efficient as far as these things go. You can shoot down ones out of reach with your bow or a fireball. I used to sell all i found, until i realised how invaluable they could be. I only carried health and sorcery potions before, but a Welkynd Stone is far better than any sorcery potion, so now i carry 5 Welkynds and happily sell all sorcery potions i find!
How to get the best price? Well, here's where tricks become useful. If you talk to someone with your weapon out, you will recieve a -10 to your disposition with that person. However, if you then speechcraft them to the max disp, and talk to them again but with your weapon sheathed, you'll notice that the disposition is 10 higher than a second a go. Hence, you can increase the default max dispostion of anyone you talk to be 10.
The Arcane University is The Shit. Spelling making is too fun. Here is some things ive noticed.
The most expensive enchantments are Protection and Fortification. Money is generally not an issue though, soul gems are. Get a hold of a weapon enchanted with soultrap as soon as possible. I have an axe, and its invaluable cos i smack em about with my normal mace, hit 1 (hotkeyed to Soul trapping axe) and finishing blow YEAH! take another one! You can never have to many soul gems. Elenglylum (wrong spelling) is an Ayleid ruin south of Chorrol that housed a Black soul gem as a prize when i was in there once. Black soul gems are capable of capturing a human soul, making them the most powerful soul gems in the game (excluding Azura's Star, the resusable soul gem, a prize at one of the shrines. Ahem, Azura's). Mmm, as for spell making. To make a cost efficient spell the key is to rely on the duration of the spell more than the base damage. For eg. i made a spell called Vampircal Heat (gay? shut up) that does : absorb 10pts in 10ft, for 5 seconds. Thus, when being attacked by 3 guys or so, i can pinch 50 health from each and get healed 150pts myself. At a cost of 108 magicka, that is sweeeeeet. It would be far more costly to do 50pts for 1 seconds.
ADDITIONAL EDIT: Once you have Azura, you may as well sell everything below Grand/black. There aint no use for them apart from recharging weapons as you want to use greater/grand for enchantments.
Clearly, when you run about places your constantly bunnyhopping and casting spells to increase your skills. Few things to note. It seems that your skill goes up with the amount of casts made*, not the power of the cast. Hence, use your cheapest spells to increase your skills. *Either its the amount of casts made, or its to do with the efficiency of the spell, which would be why smaller ones are better). So, i thought why not make a spell that heals, detects life, creates a light and protects myself, but all in small amounts to increase the skill of each magic kind. DOESNT WORK, when you make a spell, the prodominant magic determines the nature of the spell. The one i prev mentioned was just Illusion. Oh well. Moving on.
ADDITIONAL EDIT: in order to take advantage of the system i just mentioned, when making a spell, say an uber destructive one, but you only have destructive skill of 50, and its says you need 75, heres how you get round it. If you are an expert in, say restoration, then simply add enough of a restore (absorb) affect to the spell to tip it over to being a restore spell of 75 (for example) Yay, castable!
Ways to take advantage of the spell making system even more. Create fortify spells to stats such as Armoror, Security, Speechcraft etc, 100pts for 2 seconds. These spells should cost around 20 magicka only! This gives you enough time to cast, and then use the hammer/lock/person etc. I dont actually use any of those, as they would take the fun of those mini-games away. However, the truely useful ones that i happiliy use are, Fortify Endurance, Fortify Mercantile and Fortify Luck (all by 100 pts for 2 secs). First off, its important to note that Endurance is the only stat that has bonuses relevant to each level up. Err, i mean, in my opinion, you want to get Endur to 100 first and foremost before all other stats because your health goes up by 1/10th of your endurance, so your going to want as many levels with your Endurance at 100 as poss right? In addition, if you fortify your endurance a split second before hitting the pillow to level up, this temporary endurance does count towards the health bonus. Ie, your endurance is 56, your cast 100pts fortify for 2 secs, then instantly click on a bed, your health will go up by 15 due to your temporary 156 endurance. Handy no? As for Mercantile fortifications, this allows you to get an excellant selling rate, and allows you to invest in the shop, which means they will have more money to barter with (hhaa, straight back in your pocket!). Also handy. And then theres fortifiying luck..
I dont really know, i think it smooths out armoring speechcraft etc, +5 damage with weapons. More importantly though, Iain has two Mundane Rings (insane) which is probably due to his luck being nigh 100. So, fortifiying your luck before traveling into the next area/level (which i think is when your items are spawned) should ensure better items.
Fortifying Magicka is a bit more complicated. I hear that in Morrowind you could stack spells, ie cast feather over and over again and recieve more and more bonuses. In Oblivion, casting the same spell again DOES NOTHING!! (booming voice). However, theres nothing stopping you from making an identical spell with a different name and casting that. So stacking is basically just slightly more awkward. As i was saying, i have noticed when you fortify your magicka, the amount you fortify by is full of magicka. Ie, not just a higher max of magicka, but more magicka in itself. This can be used as such: By creating spells of Fortify Magicka 100pts for say 8, 6, 4 and 2 seconds you can then cast them (from 8 secs to 2) and will have an effect of 400pts fortified for about half a second after that last cast. (gaps of 2 sec because a cast takes just more than a second). This is when you can then cast a spell with a much larger cost than you could normally cast. But surely il have no magicka after casting those fortifications you ask? nah, cos theyr fairly cheap costs due to the small duration time. Obviously, this trick would be ideal for when you know theres a fight round the corner, and you would want the uber spell to be some kinda kick ass health protection skill increasing kinda thing that lasts for ages.
Other tips, Uh, when running about and you catch a glimpse of water, always have a quick skirt around its edges to find some nirnroots.
When looking through book cases, make a point of reading anything 15gold worth or more, as it may be a Skill Increase book.
Trainers are GOOD, dont turn your nose up at them, the gold they ask for is nothing for the time they will save you.
Not my tip but - "enough alchohol will make anyone look like a slob".
Try to hang onto Quest weapons/armor for a while (assuming they're good, like Umbra and Rockshatter) as Quest items weigh 0!
When leveling up Destruction or Sneak, they only work if the destruction is making contact with someone/creature, and if your sneaking is with someone/creature present.
ADDITIONAL EDIT: Destruction clearly is awkward to level up as it needs enemies. Not so. Simply create a spell of 'Drain 3pts on self', this wont actually hurt you, but will credit some destruction skill (cast as much as poss).
Word for the wise, all those efficiently leveling up (+5+5+5) beware! If you waste too many skill increases (ie skill increases in a stat your not going to level up) then you may end up not being able to get 100 in all your stats. Im ALMOST screwed on it, from now on i will have to level up speed every level...damn acrobatics..

I don't have a huge amount of health...I just don't let anything hit me. ;)
If you play it like a twitch game you'll find that most of the enemies aren't fast enough to hit you much, if your athletics and acrobatics are high you can do all sorts of fun shit with running rings round them and leaping over them...with a Claymore. =P
Also by making my star sign the Steed for a speed bonus that makes my current style of play even easier.
I don't own any armour, I wear some enchanted robes that give some skill bonuses but have 0 armour, a couple of rings and a necklace (all magical).
I USED to run around in full heavy armour, until I realised just how rarely I was getting hit anyway and just how much loot I was throwing away due to not being able to carry it.
My next step for Oblivion (I plan to get to the top of all the guilds and finish off the main storyline on this character, not 100%, but a fair chunk of it) will be pushing the difficulty bar right up to the hardest possible and starting again.
Doing this may utterly gimp my current play-style and I may find that I need armour..
Oh, also, as long as you're doing stuff to increase your fame aswell as doing stuff to increase your infamy they balance out, for example I got Grand Champion in the Arena FIRST, for the fame it gives, then I worked on Mages Guild, Fighters Guild, Thieves Guild and Dark Brotherhood bit by bit, doing a few missions from each and any other interesting missions I came across in my travels.
MILD SPOILER WARNING READ AT YOUR OWN RISK:
Currently I am the Master of the Fighters Guild, the Grey Fox, the Listener, the Grand Champion and I'm FAIRLY sure that I'm a member of every orginisation that exists in Oblivion, I could be wrong though, if you want to see screenshots of my progress you can check over here (http://www.microplaygaming.com/board/viewtopic.php?t=1058)
ARGH!! i would just edit my previous post, but then no-one would notice the change. It seems i was wrong about magic/enchantments endurance fortifications making an affect on your health bonus as you level up. Im not quite sure how it works though, i think you get double the bonus or something if you add points to your endurance during that level up. See, i have 163 health, and 65 endurance. If i dont add anything to endurance then i have 169 health after, just as you'd expect, ya kno, 1/10th of 65 rounded down being 6 an all. However, if i add 5 to endurance during my level up, im left with 180 health. Which doesnt make sense, a bonus of 17!? thats not a 1/10th of 65, or 70, or even double or added up. I found all this out after making a whole set of endurance boosting pyjama's, with sleeping angel/devil rings and a dreamcatcher necklace (all silly names but basically every single garment inc shield with endur fortifications). YOU CAN BET YOUR BALLS IM GOING BACK A SAVE GAME!!

Is very hard to make female faces on Oblivion not look hideous, apparently. So noice.

just takes practice, time and a bit of luck. Maybe some mods too if you want to get crazy. The above one uses a few mods, think it was just hair and eyes.

I see you're using the rat knuckle duster there, a mighty weapon.
I finally got round to buying this a few weeks ago so now I finally see what all the fuss was about.

Finally completed the game last week and I'm very impressed by it.
Was great fun, once I get the expansion I will start up a new game, trying to see if I can't become a necromancer?
Completed the game fairly recently myself.
Try 5 grand soul gems enchanting 5 items at 20% cameleon. this > anything in the game. forget casting (wizards are girly men in robes anyway) - get yourself the umbra, your enchanted sandels, shirt, rings and amulet (probably costing 20 gold, at a weight of 4) and enjoy the wonders of 100% cameleon and constant x6 sneak attacks.
Bit of a joke really. You can do the main quest killing 5 characters in total. Illusionist ftw.

Found this interesting take on the Dark Brotherhood sub-quests at GameCritics.
Move over, BioShock: there's a videogame that poses even greater moral challenges (http://www.gamecritics.com/move-over-bioshock-theres-a-videogame-that-poses-even-greater-moral-challenges)
I never played the Dark Brotherhood stuff, sounds pretty crazy by his accounts. Is it really that brutal?!

By Sithis! :P
Thx for that article was pretty good Pixie, I can only say that it's up to you what to make of the dark brotherhood's "methods".
I personally find the Dark Brotherhood quests some of the best in the game since each of them is very original.
I enjoy being an assasin, I feel so deliciously evil:).

i liked watching retards trying to play the game...
my freind for example got the task to kill rufio at the inn of ill omen.
He proceeded to wipe out the contents of an in, including the cat...
I then pointed out that the map said he was at the wrong place...
Other than that being i liked piling people up in my house, they also doubled up as storage!
