University and SRC problems
SRC are now restricting us from staying overnight in the Williams Room. At present, there is little that we can do other than follow the rules. However, DAve and I will be meeting with someone in a few weeks to negotiate some kind of compromise.
This will probably include a review of the Health and Safety which is the current reason as to why we can’t be in the room after 13:00.
Members of the society should not approach the security guards for access to the SRC building. People needing access should contact someone inside of the building or if not possible, a member of the board (see list above). The security guards are a varied bunch but tend to be sour and lazy, so avoid were possible.
In answer to this problem we are going to find out if there is a phone in the Williams room that we could use, seeing as not everyone has numbers of the board members. Having said that, there are contact numbers on the website.
Once we have infiltrated the building however, leaving the door open is a great idea.
We had a chat with Subcity about staying late/getting access to the building. Basically it seems that we need a set of keys for the GUNS or at least some way of getting a back door key. This would solve the problems we’ve been having with the security guards. This will come up in the future meeting with the SRC.
SRC Van
This has been brought up before but has not been approached. We basically need two drivers with valid licences, over 21 and have had the licence for 3 years (I think). If you know anyone let us know! The mini van could be very handy and would be a great resource for the society.
Williams Room Problems
We need to start taking action against other people/groups that use the Williams room. It is almost always in a complete state when we first get there, the last LAN I had to scrub the tables and pick up loads of litter. Maybe get other things out of the way first before tackling this matter though.
The pile of junk in the corner of the Williams Room needs to be removed. It has been there since the Freshers Fair, and takes up a fair bit of space, at least enough room for another 6 to 8 people. Again, shall be brought up in the SRC meeting.
LAN Payment
There was talk of locking IP’s until players have paid, but this was deemed unnecessary and over the top.
However, more frequent rounds by the treasurer will be employed to catch late comers.
Prices might be changed to encourage signing up. This it yet to be finalised.
Sponsors
Both Jan and Strings seem to very enthusiastic about getting a sponsor for the LAN. Strings is currently arranging prizes with Mircoplay, not sure were he has got with this at present. Other suggested names included Irn-Bru, Tunnock’s (teacakes!!!) and various hardware companies. More on this in the future I suspect.
Change of branding
To maybe give our society a more inviting image, it was suggested that a new name/logo was in order. This is not going to happen over night and will also need the majorities vote before any changes. Any ideas for a new logo/name are very welcome!
Advertising
Stronger advertising of LANs and GUNS in general was strongly in favour. More posters, a column in the Student Guardian etc. However, this maybe be held off until a new design for the GUNS logo/name arises and we have the actual ability to deal with a LAN larger than 32.
LAN Organisation Issues
Wireless access will have to investigated properly, as it would be a very useful tool, almost purely for Steam.
File sharing during games will not be tolerated during gaming, goes with out saying really.
Website
Big thank you to Sideshow, you are our God. He has done a great job with the website and has improved the integration of the website to the forum, it just keeps getting better!
Think that was about it really, please say if I missed anything.
Thanks,
Bluepixie
