View Full Version : DOW DC: Summer 1v1 Tournament 2008
After a nostalgic chat with Peter there, I've decided I'm gonna organize a Dawn of War: Dark Crusade 1v1 tournament this Summer, similar to the one organized by Iain last year. All skill levels are welcome and last year I recall there was a lot of good competition fighting amongst the middle and lower portions of the table.
- Round robin tournament
- Approximately one match per week
- Each match being a 'best of 3' on a particular map.
Maps
The maps are the standard online automatch ones, with the map for each week being decided at random from the maps not yet played.

All the fixtures and maps for each round are now up.
For those that are interested, I used this (http://www.teamopolis.com/tools/round-robin-generator.aspx) for the fixture generation and random.org's list randomizer (http://www.random.org/lists/) to calculate the map for each round.
You're free to start playing your first round game!
It's usually best to organize a time with your opponent via PMs / Ventrilo etc.
Try your best to get this round played by the end of Wednesday 9th July.
Remember to record replays for each of your games.
Once the match is over, ZIP the replays for all 3 games, and attach then to a post with the match result.
Good luck and have fun! :D
Sorry - last minute reshuffle to include a late entry from Peter.

Yeah was excellent yesterday, particularly having so many people around to spectate and stuff. :)
Some good games yesterday. Watched some of the replays back and thought I'd give some pointers. I'll start with caveman v octavion.
Caveman: Fata Morga is a large map, points spread out. The size of the map makes harrasing with the command squad more risky. By the time the CS reaches the opponents base, your opponent is likely to have a strong force out. Rather than rushing straight into your opponents base and attempting to take down power/ barracks, I would put the CS on ranged and concentrate on taking down capping units and builders. You invested in a psyker, which is a decent call against tau (and suggests you were planning on attacking stealthsuits), yet persevered with buildings (where the priest prevails). You basically threw away the CS for nothing, which led to octavion having the upper hand until vehicles or plasma turned the tide.
Keep the command squad moving, and harras points, crippling octavions economy would help avoid that horrible kroot mass.
If its just the Tau commander shooting, use the psyker ability and go close combat. If there's more than that shooting/chasing I would use the terrible pathing (on that map particularly) to keep running between points. This gives your guardsmen some time to cap and group together outside the oppositions base. Too many of these battles took place just outside your base. In fairness Tau are one of the best tier one aggressors, but if we break down the armies; say two squads of kroot and TC versus 3 squads of guardsmen and CS. In a toe to toe battle I would eliminate the TC threat with the CS going close combat and then micro the chasing kroot leaving one squad to do damage.
Your build order and general macro at the beginning is solid, but in a couple of the games you are sitting in your base with 2000 req in the bank. I would look to get more power down, and tech earlier. From my limited IG experience I used to go guardsmen x3, command squad with priest, 1 power after infantry command (basically your build so far) then once all my points have LPs go a second power and tech. While the tech is researching put down a third and forth power and look to go LP2.
Octavion: Just small comments to make off the top of my head; you're matching up threats nicely - good use of the stealthsuits on the hellhounds, kroot on the guardsmen etc.
In a few games your stealthsuits are left idle near critical locations for long periods, which I would look to avoid - ensure you are capping everything possible. In one game your last listening post goes down inside your base after 11 minutes. You should really aim to have every point secured with an LP (including the relic, which you often forgot about) after about 5 minutes. I used to practice and practice to see how fast I could cap and secure.
Game 2; which you lost, was in my opinion down to a mis-match in units. Caveman had teched to tier 2 and equipped guardsmen with priests, plasma and all the upgrades, housing them in a vehicle. You had teched, but didn't have any tier 2 units out, which essentially meant it was a tier 1 versus tier 2 battle. Admittedly Tau tier 2 is not as clear-cut as produce unit x - it seems to be about the disruption of the opposition through snare traps, target locks and missile gunships. I would look to get more power down with an eye on vehicles and teching again for crisis battlesuits. Larry plays tau so maybe he can add more.
Sideshow
17th July 2008, 22:04
To follow on from what Gor is saying about Tau T2, I rarely teched up to get vehicles in T2 - T2 (or really T1.5) was all about making sure I had a decent amount of units from T1, and then making them stupidly lethal. Try to time is so that your Stealth Squads get reinforced to full for when you hit finish the Path, and then give them all the weapon upgrade that makes them AV nightmares. SS+sergeants = GG to anyone who rushed for tanks. The first thing you should get out of the Path itself is the firewarrior upgrade, and the first unit you should build once it's down is a pathfinder squad. FW + pathfinder + upgrades = MASSIVE FIREPOWER.
'course, this assumes you're using FW and not kroot. I always found kroot to be sucky, but that's probably a play-style issue.

Cheers for the advice guys.
I'll take it on-board and try and stand up for at least 15 mins against Sid. :D
I always find I don't know what vehicles I should be going for with the Tau. The Sky Ray seems to be pretty good with the upgrade but a bit fragile. Devilfish is stealthy and transporty which is good but I always forget to build them. I'm never sure if the drone squad or drone harbinger are any good or how I should be using them so I tend not to go for them.
Kroot wise, I find them to be a really good early unit against shooty armies as, even though they don't do lots of damage, the disrupt the enemy units as they have to dance you. They also provide a nice distraction which allows the Commander to get in there with his uber-moral pwn flame thrower. Later on with the leap ability they're even better for disrupting enemy shooters and spotting for the fire warriors which hang back and pick off the enemies.
I also find the Krootox to be pretty awesome when I manage to tech enough to get one out. It can take a lot of damage and is pretty good at CCing vehicle and smashing up squads. Plus going down that tech option gives kroot hounds which are also quite nasty and allows more upgrades for the fire warriors.

No idea if they're practical in a competitive multiplayer match, but in my skirmish and campaign games, I've found Gun Drones to be surprisingly powerful. They seem quite durable and pretty good at harassing units.

As you say: Skyray is damaging but fragile. You need to treat it as artillery and never let your opponent near them. This is the main reason I avoid them - too tricky to keep alive.
Devilfish is good if you can abuse them (have a look at how Gor and Sid abuse Rhinos when the play SM for an example), but it's not easy to do.
I don't think I've ever made a Drone squad... but Drone Harbinger's are game winning. For breaking a siege/stalemate they are awesome. Make sure you have a pile of generators to use it; you'll only need to build one. In the situation where you are set up outside the enemy base (he can't get out, you can't get in), get a harbinger, get some power then:
Move harbinger up behind your units
Rally it's output to near your front line (but out of sight of the enemy)
Right click it's ability to start pumping drones
Once you reach drone saturation (i.e. when the drones start dying due to time out) rally the harbinger output to the middle of the enemy base and attack-move all your drones toward him. Once his units have all engaged the drones move your whole army up behind them. He should still be shooting at drones when your FW have set up, and from there you should nail him.

Watching the replay of my second match against gor is a good lesson in snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. It's embarrassing. Ah well, lesson learned.
Some good games there. In the first game (tau v tau) I was quite fortunate to get away with my second barracks going down, which allowed me to produce troops, and ultimately got me back in the game. I spat out the coke I was sipping when those vespids and TC arrived in my base so early. The difference was I could afford to lose my barracks, knowing that I had the req and map control to build 5 barracks around the map, whereas you were running on one point.
Second game you were in the position to go on and win, but you are never going to beat an experienced player without listening posts!!! If you have trouble managing troops and simultaneously building an economy (i.e. putting LP's down), you could have left the kroot to chase the reapers, since that was your only threat, and then spend time securing the map.
I agree you are improving hugely though - you had me worried!

I think Mark is home today, but I'm not sure if he'll be around after his long flight, so to0 vs. g0r might need to wait until a different night.
Edit: Mark is game! t00 vs. g0r 2nite!?
If everyone's around, that'd be awesome.

It up for it. I may be drinking beer while playing though...which should just make it more entertaining.

Based on his performance against Pixie he should remain quite sober. :p
Yes, I know I had the exact same problem against gor.

Perhaps a drink for every individual who dies in battle then?

Sadly I'm playing Tau so that's likely to be quite low as well. If I switch to IG though...

I wish I could claim that the second game between me and Lewis was an epic, 34 minute monster of a battle, but in actual fact it was more like a 34 minute snooze-fest watching watching the two of us attack and withdraw without making any headway. I was too scared to push forward and attack and missed a couple of good opportunities to get forward.

Try to finish up your unplayed games from the remaining rounds.
Round 7 starting on Friday.

Peter: I'm not working over the summer so I'm free pretty much most of the time to play our game - just catch me on MSN for our game when you're free.

I should be free tonight, I think Iain wants to play SoaSE too so I'm expecting a mercyless put down from you. None of this 'sit and turtle' crap you've been pulling with other folk.

Round 8 started a few days ago, BTW.
Who's around tonight? I haven't seen Muppet around in weeks, so I'll assume he isn't around for his games. Other than his games, here are the ones still to be played:
to0 vs. gor
to0 vs. Captain_Caveman
Bluepixie vs. gor
--Mogwai-- vs. Gigafuzz
Gigafuzz vs. Bluepixie
gor vs. Captain_Caveman
Octavion vs. to0
If folk wanna jump on vent tonight at 8ish, we could try and play a few of those?

Down south (damn, that sounds so dirty) yes, but I'm still able to play. On my laptop though, and haven't had any practice. I'll pop on and play if others are around though.
In other news, I got a sun tan today, it's going to take ages sitting in dark rooms to get rid of that! :(

I was away for a couple of weeks and didn't have many opportunities to play, then was moving flat. I should be good to play now though, if everyone else wants to carry on.

Cool, take your time with the games - providing this is wrapped up by Fresher's Fair it should be fine.

Bluepixie and gor were playing earlier tonight but gor's connection was being a bit dodgy so that's getting continued later.
Muppet can't be arsed playing the rest of his games and has forfeited all of his remaining games.
10 games remaining in the tournament now.

OK, just one game left to play (g0r vs. Captain_Caveman) before the final showdown between g0r and I!
Unfortunately for Caveman, even if he wins, he won't be able to overtake Octavion who is in 5th place because their head-to-head match went in Octavion's favour. At this stage, the only positions still left to be decided are 1st/2nd, which Caveman can influence by winning his game agaisnt gor :D

Round 8 Result[ 2 ] gor (Eldar) vs. Sid (Space Marines) [ 1 ]Thoroughly enjoyed this match, although upon re-watching them, they're not quite as good games as I thought, but still worth watching if you're into DoW.
---
Game 1 (the most boring of the 3 to watch): I try an ASM build (no power), but generally mess it all up and mess most of everything else up become I'm wasting my time trying to work out what to do with the ASM. Mark puts down a power and dances his guardians while LP2ing his points. By the time we're at T2, the req. advantage has manifested itself in a better army and it's an easy win for Mark.
ASM are apparently the way to go against Eldar, but they're not a unit that I ever use, so it was perhaps a bit stupid of me to experiment with them in the final of a tournament. I think I'd really need to use Sniper scouts, too.
Game 2(the 2nd most boring of the 3 to watch): I revert to a more standard FC + 1 power build; Mark does some stupid 2 power build which he's never going to win with. I have no idea what he was thinking. Easy win for me.
Game 3(The best game i.e. no stupid build orders from either of us): I continue with my standard FC/2 scouts/power build. Mark reverts back to his 1 power / 3 guardians + Rangers build. Although my original worry on this map against Eldar was that I'd be my unable to match 3xguardian + Ranger squad thus losing map control, I think it would've been possible to win against Mark's build with my build, however I basically did nothing with my FC - letting Mark's guardians cap, threw away my 2 scout squads, and it's realistically game over by the time I type "fs" at 4:30.
I get away with hiding behind an LP2 until T2, at which point I have sufficient troops to begin killing Mark's units, however Mark had held the map for so long during T1/early T2 that he has a ridiculous req. advantage and killing his guardians/reapers/LP2s makes little difference at this stage. I hit T3 first and my marines/GK/heroes are good enough to kill Mark's warp spiders, but I waste too long trying to finish them off (and never quite do), when I probably should've just hammered down his base. When Mark's Seer Council is out, I begin to run away to avoid getting caught by the Warp Spider mass, but a pathing error made my FC/SM squad run back into the action, which means it's time to give up for me. However, everything that is mentioned in this paragraph is all fairly trivial as the game was all but won in T1 by Mark's sharper/my shit micro - making this the best game to watch, particularly for understanding the importance of micro and map control.

Only caught the last game due to the awesomeness of Crysis Wars, but yeah, was great to watch. Lots of dancing and cat/mouse fighting. :p I've updated the first page with the results.
One game to go!!! :)
