View Full Version : Important! UPDATE STEAM!
Sideshow

...because it actually can't be said too many times: everyone remember to UPDATE STEAM! Every other software problem is fixable on the day, but if you haven't got an up to date steam, you are going to miss out on a large proportion of the games played (CS, CS:S, HL DM, HL2 DM).
So, the last thing you should do before packing up your machine, is connect to steam, run all the games you think you are going to be playing (see list above), exit steam, disconnect your internets, restart steam - it should ask you if you want to run in offline mode - Yes you do*. Run each game again, just to make sure. If all that works, pack up your computer.
*Offline mode is only available if you have steam remembering your login username and password.

Cheers, sideshow.
Yes, it is very important to check that offline mode works and that you can play the games while in offline mode.
The quickest way to do that is by disconnecting the modem / net cable and trying the games individually.
It's the only way to make sure :)

I generally find it yells at me for most games when in offline mode. =(
Although I've never actually TRIED CS, it's usually difficult about CZ.

Everything in mine is set to auto-update, all I have to do is log on Friday night to check for updates before safe-modeing to virus scan etc. =D

It would be nice if everyone updated steam, ran a virus check, defragged and backed up all their important data before the lan.

I have nothing to back up to, currently, however I defragged the other day and shouldn't have to install / uninstall anything but updates (which are usually small) before the lan and I'll be virus scanning on Friday night.
So I do most of what you suggest.

BUMP
Small CS:S patch released today, and it's good to remind everyone to update all Steam based games if they can.
EDIT:
Another good thing to do is get XFIRE (http://www.xfire.com/xf/index.php) then turn on automatic patching, set the download rates to "Maximum", have it detect all your games that it supports and then restart it, and just leave it running overnight, it should patch all your games that way. =)

Steam updates are generally released on tuesday/wednesday on every week. So as long as you load up steam and auto-update on thursday/friday everything you should be ok.
Also, Hi, i'm new to guns and will be attending this coming lan, go me etc. \o/

Is there a possibility of updating Steam on the day? BT are fucking around with my broadband and it's been impossible for me to connect at home for the past fortnight.

Hmmm. It'd be nice if we had an internet connection, but I don't think we can get one. DAve?

quick point here.
People should do everything they can to ensure that they are fully patched up proir to the lans. You can't count on internet access at all here.
I have just received some bad news about the net access: we're not getting any. It's official. The university net doesn't allow access to folk like us :(
For fairly obvious reasons we cannot allow non-university machines
or people to attach to the university network.
Please Note too, Users are aslo bound by the terms of the aceptable
use policies of the University and Janet.
We might be able to get some kind soul to offer some internet access in their flat nearby.
Don't worry, we'll get you updated somehow :)

I do have a car, so if anyone can be arsed to let me borrow their connection temporarily I'd appreciate it. Perhaps in exchange for a lift? :-)
If it's going to be too much trouble I'll just stick to playing UT2004 etc. I read that the latest Steam update just updates CSS, would it be possible for me to play the other Steam games without the update?

Yes, the other steam games should work fine.
As I say, we'll work something out for updating. Most people stay within 10 mins of the uni in a car, and most of us have net access, so it should be fairly easy to convince them to lend some bandwidth for 10 mins.
I would ask everyone else to make sure steam works in OFFLINE MODE before they leave their flats, and of course, it's updated if you can.

If you are going to need to authenticate steam (i.e. you don't have internet access at home), then please add your name to this list (http://guns.snakebomb.com/wiki/I_need_Steam%21). This will help the setup on Saturday morning go smoother.

I know we'll have a connection but please make sure you have Steam patched and all your games installed. We do not want people downloading big files at the lan.

how about using something like steambuster + share someones (updated) steam fiolder?
how about using something like steambuster + share someones (updated) steam fiolder?
Recently we've had a really decent net connection, so we've been able to let it do the small 'setting up' bit after the GCFs are put in the correct folder (people already share their GCFs when needed). Could you explain how steambuster works?
phycho
22nd May 2007, 14:50
runs directly off of the GCF's. emulates steam - no need for steam at all. can load up the games directly from the GCF files. works well on lan but wont work on a VAC secured server.
I'm a bit skeptical about running steambuster for a lan - mostly because everyone by now has a copy of CS:S and HL2 workig with steam.
do we need it for a specific reason?
Uuurrahh
22nd May 2007, 17:15
One advantage is that it'd allow us to play less common steam stuff. Everyone has a copy of CS:S & HL2 but there are an arseload more games on steam that'd be fun that not many have.
*cough* Red Orchestra *cough*
phycho

even standard cs.. not everyone has that either. if the net doesnt work its also got that advantage too that everyone can play.

not to sound too snooty, but if you like a game enough to play it at a lan, then you really should buy it. Especially if it's CS. I mean, I think I've bought 8 copies of that game (HL/CS1.6) so far. I think I should have got a free t-shirt or head-crab with the 5th. ;)
Frankly I think this is heading into dangerous territory. What you're suggesting is tantamount to piracy, even if it is only short term piracy. I suspect this is something of a legal grey area, and more to the point all the steam games we play commonly are owned by pretty much everyone. Noone really plays HL1 and its mods any more, and anyone who doesn't yet own HL2, CS:S etc should really go buy em.

im not so sure i agree - its a loader, its a grey area and if you have already paid for the game i see no reason why you shouldnt be allowed to run it without the steam issues which are sometimes present at the lan.

Yer. Maw.
Besides, GCFs aren't games. They're transport archives, containing the encrypted game files, which you need a legit serial to decrypt - so Hex is talking out of his arse again :D
One more thing - discussing piracy on the forums is fine. Links, though..

We haven't had any issues with steam lately that I know of, being as we've had a nice reliable internet connection. More than that, so far the only interest in this we've seen is to play games that not everyone owns! Having read the forums, it seems far from the most reliable piece of software anyways. Personally I own all the games I want to play...I take it a standard legit steam account can still join games run from steambuster?

No chance am I paying for a game that i've played ONCE at a LAN and can't say I really enjoyed. FPS (bf2 excepted) can for the most part lick my balls like, I guess like real micro belongs in MMO :P
