Important Update:
The Fratellis are playing at the QMU on Friday night and they've got their entire touring rig (own lights etc.) so they're gonna take hours to pack up on Friday night and so it is likely that Cheesy Pop is going to be delayed.
So instead, the QMU entertainment manager wants to run a DJ in the Food Factory until around midnight or whenever the Fratellis are packed up. This means no Friday setup for us.
So just arrive on Saturday morning only! 10am onwards.

A DJ in the food factory? That's pretty lame.
Anyone fancy going for a drink on Friday night instead of the set-up then?

man when cheesy pop was in the food factory it was realy weird - it felt like a school disco! lots of wee fridges everywhere, and the cloakroom was behind a desk.

Just noticed that GUGS are doing some form of convention (http://www.conflagration.org.uk/) in the Qm this weekend. Is this going to conflict?

Yeah, they're running their Conflaguration event this weekend. I think that a few people at GUGs had intended to muscle us out of the Food Factory as they wanted all the space, but I set them straight a while ago and they'll only be allowed to use the Lacuna end of the Food Factory - so this won't affect us.

Hopefully we can just stick to our corner of the Food Factory (assuming Conflagration is taking place in the Food Factory).
The fact that they are charging entry could be tricky though.

As far as I'm aware, they've not really got any authority in the QM whatsoever so they won't be standing at the front door and charging people as they come in. In fact, I'd be surprised if the QMU knew that they were charging randoms off the street, at all.
I believe they've just booked a few rooms for their event and intend to take money off the people that turn up and play.
I doubt anyone will ask any of you, but if they do, saying "I'm not at my union for your gaming thing." should be more than sufficient and if I find that they're harrassing every person that walks into the Food Factory to pay, I'll be slightly pissed off and will probably have words, bearing in mind that I allowed them to use the other end of the Food Factory as a favour.

Most GUGS aren't the confrontational types so I doubt we'll have any trouble.

That's extremely cheeky.
The QMU has the room-booking system so that this doesn't happen - societies shouldn't have to fight with each other for space. If GUGS wanted to have the entire Food Factory for their event, they should have asked at the time, not plotted to have us evicted. It's not cool, especially as I thought they had similar interests as us - certainly their President seemed pretty interested and sound when he came around at the last LAN.

It does sound a bit odd that this sort of thing should happen with any kind of booking system, but I'm sure we'll manage. It just means that the QM will reach a critical mass of geeks.

Yeah. It was just a case of the GUGS Conflagration Convener being extremely disorganized by only beginning to think about booking the venue (for what is essentially their biggest event of the year), just 1 month before.
I was thinking "fuck right off" when I got an e-mail saying "not only are we willing to offer Pause a booth to promote your club at the convention free of charge, but also that we should have room for some lan party to still happen. How much I don't know." and pretty much told them exactly that. I did say however, that despite us having the booking for the whole Food Factory that weekend, I'm happy for them to use the Lacuna end.
Again though, you guys don't need to worry about this - it was all sorted weeks ago and there will be no problem. It was just their Conflagration Convener that fucked up and possibly tried to mess us about but I've always found everyone else at the club to be very friendly.

I realize that everyone's busy just now and wasn't really expecting big numbers for the last LAN or this one, but is anyone else intending to come along to this LAN? There's only 13 signed up so far. Is it worth having a LAN for 13 people?
Bluepixie
20th February 2008, 00:49
We've had smaller LAN's than that in the past which have been just as much fun, if not sometimes even more so than larger LAN's. Only difference would be to gauge the setup with respect to the anticipated numbers.
edit: for example (http://pausegaming.com/photoalbums/2005-2006/GUNS_LAN_6_01_-_04_-_06/PICT0029.JPG) total was about 9 I think. The white board says it all really. :D

DotA is something that's never really happened at our LANs for some reason.
In terms of Strategy, there were a few people that played Starcraft for a while but not anymore. There's a lot of people that play Dawn of War and a few folk who play it to quite a high level. On the whole, I think most people are looking forward to Starcraft 2.
Are you into any other games?
Welcome to PauseGaming, by the way!

Generally, I come up with a fairly solid timetable before each LAN, based on what everyone at the club fancies playing, but as this is going to a smaller LAN, I think I'll just schedule the "big ones" such as COD4, WiC, BF etc. and leave more gaps for an hour or two of a casual "what game do you guys want to try?" type thing in between.
I'm absolutely bogged down with a million assignments at the moment so I've not had a chance to get it all down on paper but as a rough guide you should look at some of the timetables of our last few LANs.

Well I'm gonna go, because games are better when you can pop your head over a monitor and shout 'Where's you Honour, you kill-skank!'
Is SINS going to be still as prominent by then or shall we get on another interesting strategy bandwagon for feb?

I should be coming along to this LAN, I don't remember having anything else to do that weekend but a freak snowstorm or lightning can't be ruled out.
Is everyone still obsessed with L4D? I know I am, and LAN 3 kinda put me off playing it online because it's so much better when you play with people in the same room.
Random question, is the Prince from Sands of Time lazy? I got the PC version over Christmas and he seems to like walking in slow motion.

The correct thread for this year's February LAN will go up nearer the time. Probably next week. Please do contain your excitement until then.
