Only an hour for TF2?
:(
Sid
18th November 2007, 13:52
We scheduled two hours at the last LAN and it seemed to kinda die out before the two hours was up. It is a popular game though, so it probably should get two hours. Perhaps 2 x 1 hour slots would work?
Hex

Another Source tourney eh? Same format? Timetable looks good IMO :-)

Looks pretty good. A few spots for some random games, if people aren't playing certain things (e.g. I won't be playing Live for Speed, and last time a few of us had a bash at UT3), which is good.
TF2 might be ok for an hour, but I think we need to at least make sure that the teams are sorted out, and if using Vent, make sure that everyone's on, and in the correct channel. Last time felt a bit like a random pick-up internet match.
Sid
18th November 2007, 16:20
Yeah same sort of format for the Source tournament. We've basically tried to keep everything that went down well last time and add a few new things in that people seemed to want (organized WiC, BF2142 etc.)
We could make the 2-hour slot of WiC on the Sunday night into 1-hour of WiC and 1 extra hour of TF2?
Fil2eFly

Yeh, some of us will be having a big games of Worms, for example, during the Live for Speed timetabling.
And yeh, it's cool if you take your PC home on the Saturday, but why would you bother? It's not like we're going to rape your PC for components :P

Yeah, there were a few game of Worms happening at certain times (other than the actual scheduled Worms), and I think the big game of the UT3 demo happened during the Live for Speed game.
If there's an opening, and there's a game a few people have access to, then there's always a chance it'll be played if someone suggests it.

Hey John,
Yeah - while try to schedule something for everyone and encourage everyone to play all the games that are scheduled, we can't force people to play every game, and so usually for some of the less popular games, people will get a secondary game of something going in the background.
You're also more than welcome to take your PC home on Saturday night and bring it back on Sunday.

Hahaha, anytime anyone mentions sleep deprivation it reminds me of 2005 LANage and trying to play RISK at 4am with Strings and Pit. Around an hour into the game Andy actually fell asleep on the table....after which his behaviour became somewhat "erratic"

Weight?
Yega isn't fat you morbidly underweight fool, look at the length of the couches and then look at the height of me, or Larry, or Yega.
We're all too tall to sleep comfortably on them because they're small couches, Ru is about the right height to sleep on one without complaint, as is hobbit. =/

I am not morbidly underweight, I weigh a perfectly healthy 13 stone :-P
More to the point, whatever you meant, it seems pretty evident to me that Yega felt offended by your size based comparisons! And you're still a shocking troll!
YegaDoyai

Ru actually used 2 at the last lan and seemed 'cosy' at that. The idea that any of pauses heavyweight members could use them as anything other than slippers is laughable.

In Worms, in the text chat, using /anon allows you to type anonymous messages to everyone. Much fun was had trading 'Yer Maw' jokes with that one.

It's my 21st birthday on Saturday so I'm not going to be around in the evening so I'm looking for someone else to run the CS:S tournament. It basically just involves working out how many people are playing, choosing a number of teams that the number of players divides into, choosing the best players as captain for each team, getting everyone else to pair/three-up and allocate them to captains.
Either that or we could scrap the CS tournament altogether?
What do people think?

First of all, an advanced Happy Birthday!
Secondly, I personally wouldn't miss a CS:S tourney, but would still be happy to play in one. I would have thought it would be sufficiently popular that someone could step-up and run it.

I have a plan:
When Sid gets up to leave we all grab onto his legs and shout "Sid, I love you! Please don't leave me like this!!! How are we meant to know the map rotation? You are our light in this fog draped maze, our lighthouse in the storm, our label with our name and address sown into the back of our shirts..."
Too much?

better idea, get him legless drunk so he cant leave. then get in some gogo dancers.

29th November 2007, 13:26
Lol, nice idea Yega ;-)
The question really is how many people besides Sid are gonna be away for the birthday outing? If Larry, Muppet, etc will be about then we've got a) enough people and b) enough organisation to have the tourney. If however half the committee is also going out then we might as well forget about it...

YegaDoyai
29th November 2007, 17:14
Tbh, I'm not sure we can do it this last minute, normally you have to get permission from the building owner and then you'd need to actually need to make sure you are getting what you ask for by getting a private session to 'test the goods' as it were. As it is I'm not sure we can, unless someone knows a stripper?
Man that would be messed up.
"Hey! Get your boobs out my face! This is the CS:S Final woman!"
Sid
29th November 2007, 18:21
I imagine that a few of the captains from last time might not be around for it, but I'm not really sure at this stage. There should still be enough for at least 4 teams of 5. I guess we should just wait and see what happens on the day.
It's probably worth doing a vote at dinner time to see who would rather play something else other than the CS tournament. If more than 50% would prefer to play something else then just organize another game to play - the only real requirement is that it has to be fun and something that everyone will take part in - since it's the 7-9pm Saturday night slot.
If the CS tournament does go ahead, it just means that by 7pm, a couple of you will need to take the bulls by the horn and stand up and organize it. Stuart, DJ_Evil and TK_Maximus: you guys wanna organize it between you guys?

saladin
30th November 2007, 17:48
Seriously, the underground is perfectly safe, even with a laptop. You'll be going from Buchanan street, middle class shopping Mecca to hillhead, middle class and student expensive food and drink mecca. I'm sure one of us could pop down to walk you to the qmu if you're still worried!
Hex
30th November 2007, 18:03
Indeed, it's perfectly safe to carry laptops around Glasgow - I have one in my rucksack most days of the week and I never run into any trouble. I wouldn't suggest taking a desktop on the subway (unless it's a particularly small one) just because it'd be hassle lugging the thing around, but you should be fine with a laptop.

There is a good reason for this - bringing speakers to a LAN so that you can watch movies/play shit techno/play CS loud enough for the whole room to hear your AWP fire is FUCKING ANNOYING for the rest of the room. I would of thought basic courtesy would kick in here and people would use a bit of common sense...

Epic hypocrisy, if it's such a poor show you should have come over and told me, rather than posting it on the forum :-P

Well quite clearly playing World in Conflict all night doesn't work for some people so we watched a movie, I would of thought a better projector setup would of been present at this LAN.
I also thought it was way too quiet in here a lot of the time, there is no where near the soul to this LAN as the first Pause LAN this year...
Hex, throwing a hairy fit like that when most people were eating and a group of us were watching a film wasn't that cool tbh, its not as if a tournament was on or anything else.
I will be bringing the speakers again, I haven't played music on it all weekend which I ended up doing at Scum LAN a couple of weeks ago without ANY complaints.
Also I don't appreciate people coming over that are NOT commitee members and taking my items without due permission from myself, I don't want to a be a dick here but I really don't like people touching my stuff when I bring a couple of grands worth of items, 2 computers etc is a fair amount of money for me to carry when there is the possibility of people helping themselves.
It made me feel very unwelcome the whole weekend with certain peoples comments that were not that well recieved by myself. I don't normally take offense but I have really been disappointed in some people this weekend so much that I would probably consider not coming back.
My speakers did end up saving people unable to play guitar hero also so at least some people appreciated that I brought them, not like I brought 200W fuck off speakers and left shitty rock music playing all weekend is it?
Wank.

That's not the point, it's highly annoying having to listen to the sound of music/movie/whatever else. I asked you nicely to turn the sound off twice, and you ignored me, so I got annoyed and yelled at you, not really a huge surprise. Everyone here has headphones of some sort, so if you wanna watch a movie with ure gf bring a headphone splitter and do it without annoying everyone else.

Stick it up your arse. We were trying to play a game and I could barely hear my own headphones over the massive level of noise coming from your speakers, I pointed this out to you more than once and you continued with the level of noise, so I made my point more effectively since you seemed unwilling to actually listen to what was being said to you.
Speakers + Game != Good LAN.
Headphones + Game = Good LAN.
Watching movies late at night is fine by me, even with speakers, however compromise is essential to ensure that people can hear what's happening in the games they're playing to a reasonable degree. Perhaps you don't realise just how loud your speakers are sometimes but it really does intrude on the rest of our games, which you have been told, and our enjoyment of the LAN in general when we can't hear what the fuck is going on clearly because of excessively loud movies / someone elses' game.
The same issue has arrisen in the past concerning the level of noise from GH (and other console games), and the "no speakers" rule has been part of Pause from the start, and was part of GUNS before that because it makes sense that everyone bring headphones rather than have a cacophany of intruding noises from every side and angle.
You don't want to be a dick here, but it's too late for that, you were being a dick from the moment you ignored people telling you that your shit was too loud and to turn it down. =/

The same issue *has* arisen - but its only a complaint from people who like to complain. If people want to watch a movie with speakers they are perfctly entitled to - its hardly 'excessive noise' whe its only a movie or two and perhaps some GH on projector. The fact that you have headphones for games should mean you hear your game more than any surrounding noise anyway???
Stop being so hostile please - its not your place to dictate what others can and cannot do at LAN.

Exactly. It's not any member's prerogative to 'go off on one' or be abusive to other members who they have an issue with. If you have a problem then you should tell a committee member, who will be in a position to deal with it. Half the problem is people thinking they have the same authority as commitee members (or equivalently: mods on the forum), which they don't.

It is excessive noise when it's turned up loudly enough that my headphones are drowned out while I'm wearing them. Which happened. Hence the complaint. =/

That was during a "Fun" game of CSS I believe so your point is not valid imo, I did turn it down and off after being told.
Since you kept whining I turned them back on really loud, I think some people really can't take a joke which surprises me since you seem to have a good laugh on the forums most of the time ...
This LAN in comparison to Pause 1 has been a let down, and 99% of that let down is due to attitudes that I have seen to myself and also to my friends that came with me this time round, which really isn't on :/
The commitee and all the other people I have met before were top notch as always :D
Fyndir its still not very nice to take sometimes items off them that they bring to the LAN without just cause. Don't get me wrong I've had a good laugh with you at this LAN compared with the first as I didn't get to know you that well, please do not take my comments too personally but I think you were out of line.
None of the 4 people, yes 4 people watching the film heard you at all, you could of got up and come over instead of staying with your friends and raging about it Hex.
It was a quiet time of the night, the majority of people were eating dinner or away getting dinner/drunk so I really didn't see any issue with it. We all had headphones, hell Icewinds headphones were louder than my speakers mate.
I also put on normalization because as with most films when music was on it was loud as fuck but when people were talking it was quiet as fuck, I adjusted the volume CONSTANTLY to keep people happy you can ask any of the people that were over at my desk at any point during the film, so really grow a set of balls and confront me next time or just relax and not take games so seriously.

Still, the Committee members should be there to handle MAJOR problems. Not every nitpicky "*whine* He's got speakers!" problem that presents itself. Similarly to Gumpcom, the use of speakers is not allowed at our LANs and this should have been rather obvious.
Sideshow, Mogwai, theres a big difference between abuse and shouting "turn ya speakers off ya cock." The way you seem to interpret abuse here would mean that the shouts of "fuck off you cock!", "you laggy cunt!", "Stop being a wank!" that are commonly heard during games should be stopped because they are abusive.
Back off seriously.
And Fyndir, don't get aggressive because someone says something slightly contrary. Its just silly!

lol wut? theres a big difference between in-game banter and out-of-game being a complete dick, which you need to recognise,as youre talking shite tbh. Noone should have to deal with people coming up and having a go - if someone does something you dont like, ask politely a couple times for them to stop - if they, don't, then tough luck, but you'll have to wait for a committee member to sort it out.
If people are thinking about not coming back to our events based on that attitudes of certain members, then its obvious those members are being out of line :)

I enjoyed myself, minus the complaints i recived about my headphones, but hey what can i say, i need to hear everything that happens in the game even if it is a pin drop ( and lithgow will know about this more than others when is comes to CoD4 )
Everyone is complaining about Lithgows Speakers when my headphones were probaly the loudest things there.
I have to agree in certain terms, Speakers are not something that should be used at lans. HOWEVER, if you have been to any other lans ie Gumpcom or i series then you would relise that music is generaly played at quite a high level through out the day and most of the night. I would have probaly seen this more of an issue if there was more than one set of speakers on the go.
I tend to find however that regardless of how loud other shit is round about me all i hear is the game in front of me ( with the exception of CS:S cause i hate the dam thing and i lack all concentration in it ).
But regardless of how louds someones speakers are you should never confront them yourself. Always ask a staff/commitee member to do it for you, if you go off on one at the person with the loud speakers then you put yourself in the postion of possibly being asked to leave the event, where as if you ask a staff member to do it instead, the only person that is put in that postion would be the gamer creating excess noise using their speakers ie refusing to turn them down.
All in all, for the first Pause gaming that i have attended i would give it 7 out of 10 on a LAN scale. Not because of anyones attitudes towardes anyone else, but probaly due to the same one game being played longer than really schedueled, but as i said at the start of the post, still a good lan.

Let me guess, World in Conflict? We did indeed play a lot of it. Thankfully, I enjoy it, but could easily see how others wouldn't. The trouble is, not enough people had copies of any other games that were suggested, so it basically came down to CS or WiC to fill any gaps.

Aye, I think for next time we need a set in stone timetable out a week before the event so if people don't have a particular game they can get a copy and have it patched up read for the LAN.
Remember to put up you preferred games here (http://www.pausegaming.com/games.php) so that the timetable organisers can get an idea of what people want.

Hai guyz, we have permissions to do whatever we want and ignore complaints. =D =D =D =D
That was a joke, incase people don't get it.
The main problem here is, as Sideshow said, authority.
Who can we turn to when the committee isn't there?
Time to be open and honest, I went over and hijacked the server machine late at night to get RCON access for map changes so that we could actually have fun. I did this because no-one with authority to do so was present.
In the same line of reasoning, I looked after the tuck shop when no-one was around, I would PREFER that I didn't have to do that, but if no-one from the committee is going to be there overnight then someone will have to do it.
I am asked to look after things like the Tuck Shop. I end up sorting out the server.
I'm seriously just not going to bother with the tuck shop at the next LAN, nor will I bother with server admin shit, and because I'm doing neither of those committee duties I won't take matters into my own hands.
Make your minds up as to what you want me to be, because I can't be fucked having to run to the committee when someone is pissing me off and I can't be fucked dealing with committee shit when they're not here.
You can't have it both ways, so make your minds up as to what you want me to be as far as attending LANs goes.

We leave the server running and freely open without password for exactly this reason. There may/will be times when no committee member is about to deal with the server, i.e. map rotation etc.
The desktop is laid out in such a way that all servers and server settings can easily be found - and as Fyndir did, went and found out the rcon pass. Sure, someone could of told you the pass, but where's the fun in that? ;) Would rather have someone who knows what their doing with a server, to touch the server.
Anyway, thread closing - move the convo to Feedback please.
