View Full Version : Dawn Of War - summer league?

--Mogwai--
14th June 2007, 16:56
a few folk have mentioned they'd be interested in an online league for dawn of war : dark crusade over summer while there are no LANs scheduled. myself and sideshow are more than happy to organise/run/moderate it, and games could easily be organised on the forums/msn and played online via the game-lobby or hamachi whenever its convenient.

rules would be pretty straightforward, round robin or swiss pairings depending on numbers, each round has a set map, rounds are best of 3 games on that map.
to keep things running smoothly each round would have a time-limit of a few days to a week to get results in while allowing people flexibility to find time to play.

this is just a rough plan for now, post here if youre interested in playing or have any suggestions for the league setup!

also, if youve never played before, but want to join, the basics are no trouble to teach! :)

ok here are the maps/game settings that will most likely be played

game settings -

Win Conditions: Annihilate, Control Area, Take and hold
Starting Resource: Standard
Lock Teams: Yes
Enable Cheats: No
Starting Location: Random
Game Speed: Normal
Resource Sharing: No
Resource Rate: Standard

each round will be on a map chosen (at random by an admin) from the following list:

Battle Marshes
Blood River
Bloody Hell
Emerald River
Fallen City
Fata Morga
Meeting of Minds
Outer Reaches
Quests Triumph
Shrine of Excellion
Titans Fall
Tranquilities End

i.e. all games round 1 are on titans fall , all games round 2 are on fata morga etc etc.

this league will be a good test run for pausegaming.com's new tournament organisation system, so everyone please go to

http://www.pausegaming.com/tournament/

and register / sign-up for the dawn of war dark crusade 1v1.

If it's gonna be a league you might wanna avoid swiss parings. What about the way Arena did it?

well the swiss guarantess people are paired against players of similar standing and skill, though depending on numbers and peoples preferences it could be any format, really.

I'd be happy to take part, I fully expect to lose. =P

get some practice games! once you work out a basic build order and know which of your units are good against whatever your opponent has, its straightforward :)

Yeah swiss does do that, but you can't really run a league format in swiss - eventually you're gonna get repeat matches or daft pairings. Can't remember how Arena did it, but I do seem to remember you could just play the same players over and over, so if instead of that you say, limited the amount of times people could play ech other to 2 or 4 depending on how big your league was that might work really well. I have a spreadsheet kicking about somewhere with a fixture list that auto generates a league table when you input the results if you're interested.

Can't we get the users synched?

Muppet
14th June 2007, 21:38
Unlikely, passwords are gathered/stored differently. I may be swap to another league system - so its not definite yet.

I'll try synching with default passwords.

Too much hassle really.. only takes about 10-15 secs to register and no e-mail verification.

Fyndir

Yet you'll happily play games where people are blown to pieces, into tiny little bloody chunks.

How strange. ;)

Obviously. =P

BWAH HA HA HA, I screw up your lovely 8 player tourny by joining and making it the ultimate in awkward numbers a 9 player.

--Mogwai--
18th June 2007, 16:08
nice one captain_caveman, more players is never a bad thing. as for numbers, no worries there will be probably 11+ players, just some folk are on holiday atm or they havnt bothered to sign up yet. an odd number hopefully wont be a problem with the schedule we have in mind.

GingerPrinz
18th June 2007, 16:11
When are you thinking of running it? Like I may make a small space in my schedule, plus I have abuddy who quite fancies his chances...

--Mogwai--
18th June 2007, 16:51
should be starting in a week or 2. just so we have enough time ot get it all organised and to make sure everyone who wants to play knows about it.

edit: sign up yourself and as many others as you can find!

--Mogwai--
24th June 2007, 20:04
ok, this league will start this comthing thursday (the 28th), with rounds lasting 3-4 days. i.e. you have 3-4 days within which to contact your opponent and arrange to play. 2 matches a week isnt much to ask, and seems a nice balance between flexibility and keeping the momentum going.

sign-ups will be open until thursday, and then the first rounds will be paired, and the tournament system *should* take it from there with regards to telling you who your opponent is, what maps are to be played etc. any questions/problems , just ask myself, sideshow, or muppet.

TK-Maximus
24th June 2007, 23:22
Not to throw too big a spanner in the works, but I know myself and King will be in england Friday, Saturday, Sunday coming up.

--Mogwai--
25th June 2007, 01:13
not much of a problem, just try to find a spare hour thursday (round1) or monday/tuesday (round2) i mean i assume a fair few folk will be away for whatever reason as its summer, hence the relatively loose schedule.

--Mogwai--
25th June 2007, 01:48
a reminder/update for the rules of this tournament. round 1 will start this coming thursday! a round one thread will be started nearer the time.

- Each match will be played in a 'Best of 3' style
- Pairings will be based on a Home vs Away system. However, either player can host the game as long as both parties consent.

!!!YOU MUST SAVE ALL REPLAYS!!!

The tournament is round-robin - everyone will play everyone. rounds will last approx. 3-4 days, i.e. you will play 2 rounds a week. Each round will have an assigned map, chosen randomly by an admin at the beginning of that round. All games played in that round must be on that map.
Before you play your first game of the round you must PM/mail an admin (mogwai, sideshow or muppet) with the race you intend to play in the first game of that round. In game 2 the winner of game 1 will choose race first, and if it goes to game 3 then the winner of game 2 chooses first. You do not need to play game 3 if the first two games are decisive, but you may if you wish.

!!!YOU MUST SAVE ALL REPLAYS!!!

Each round will have its own thread on the pausegaming forums. After you have finished the round the winner must post the scores and a zip/rar of the replays in the Round thread. Scores WILL NOT COUNT without accompanying replays. You'll find instructions on how to post replays in the thread itself.
