OMGWTFBBQ I just spent like a half hour installing goddamn linux display drivers. Never bothered doin this before but I was bored so went for it. Rather than the simple "Download, double click installer" routine on Windows, I had to download the drivers, edit my /etc/innittab file so that the machine would not run X on boot, login as root, run the installer, reedit the innittab file from the command prompt to boot X, reboot, change the resoltion up and reboot AGAIN. Surely there is some way they could make an installer that can kill X for you rather than you having to manually alter boot options so that it doesn't run?!?

ah the joys of linux - we had a girl come in today wanting on the wireless at work - not only was she using linux (which i am crap with) - but she had moved all her keys on the keyboard around and painted them all black! like linux needs to be any harder

At least ATi drivers are much simpler ;)

Restarting X should be as simple as Ctrl + Alt + Backspace

or a sudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart

If there was a smily that successfully depicted someone bouncing around in rage, before shooting everyone and then taking its own life, I would post it right now.

Hex, you've got it easy. Don't ever buy an ATI card.

Also - there are some apps that'll do everything for you, but the whole process isn't that difficult anyway, you just need to know what you're doing. And no, you don't need to reboot at all to get it working (you're just doing the noob way which is restarting). Try ctrl-alt-backspace, as Stuart suggested.

What? Only half an hour to install Linux display drivers? That's amazing - did you have a really good guide?

No, linux is (and has never been) double-click to install drivers. It's always been a pain to do - and that's just the way it is, it seems.

At least you didn't have to recompile your kernel to get the fglrx module to show up! God, that was an adventure and a half...

Yeah, the driver installer requires that X not be running at all though, so you have to boot to a lower run level and use the prompt. Pain in the fookin ass tbh.

*what Jan said*

Yeah I had a pretty good guide from the nvidia website. I know 'nix is never gonna be a *wildly* user friendly OS but this still seems like unnecessary rigmarol. Oh Mac OS X, how you have spoilt me....
