View Full Version : Also Thinking of an upgrade

So heres the dilema...

Currently have 1Gb crucial value
Looking to get 1Gb (kit) Crucial Ballistix (about the same price as value last time I looked)

So would I be better off doing a straight switch out, and having 1 Gb of fast ram or... having 2 Gb but having to run it all at crucial value speed.

Im not wanting to buy 2Gb of Ballistix as I have DDR atm and my next upgrade il be onto DDR2 so it would then be obsolete

Any suggestions???

Unless the speed difference is VAST there is very little point in swapping 1Gb of RAM for the same amount at a slightly higher speed, the performance increase will be negligible. However the performance increase you'll notice by slapping an extra 1Gb of RAM into your machine is a biggie, so my suggestion would be to buy an extra 1GB of the value RAM to up your total to 2GB.

Post full specs of you machine first please.

As a general rule you want 1Gb per core, anything on top of that is good for Vista. In general, speed of your memory will see a small increase in overall performance (in mine I can get 5% performance boost from a pretty decent 33Mhz OC) but nothing spectacular. The real reason for ocing your memory is to make sure it is running 1:1 with your CPU as that sees a more stable and better performance improvement. If it is just money burning a hole in your pocket I suggest looking elsewhere, memory upgrades tend not to affect the overall system too much.

OK, machine:

Asus A8N SLi premium
X2 4400
1Gb(2x 512) crucial value in dual channel
XFX 6800GS XXX edition

Think thats all that matters

Yeah, ignore the extra ram, it will not be as noticable as getting rid of that clunky old 6800.

yeh but the ram would cost £63, and a decent upgrade on my graphics would be an awful lot more.

Yeah, but if you dont spend the sexty squids now, the next time you have cash there will be more of it...

I hear wot ur sayin but i decided to go for the ram, 2 reasons:

-found that ebuyer do it for £49
-then realised i can use that google checkout promo to get £10 off --> 1Gb kit for £39

Think Graphics will be the next though

Google have started 'Google Checkout', as far as I can see runs kinda similar theory to paypal, have a google checkout account and use that rather than registering with 100's of different online retailers. Neway, until sumtime in may if you register and use Google checkout, u get £10 off any order over £30 at ebuyer. Has a banner on the homepage.

I forgot to say in my original post, more ram should hopefully massively reduce, if not eliminate, my problem of constantly gettin kicked off BF2 servers, without having to piss about setting affinity for 1 CPU core.

Just an anal thing with my setup --> AMD Dual cores on Asus A8N series mobo with 1Gb of ram. Although still happens to afew people with 2Gb.

There is a windows hotfix available as apparently this happens with other games aswel, but its got to be downloaded manually as its not bin released properly yet and comes with all these warnings sayin only to use it if u really have to. Im pretty sure i had to tick something effectivly sayin that if it shafts ma pc its not their fault.

£10 off? Nice. Shame I wouldn't trust Ebuyer to send me sweeties successfully.

Their packaging seems a little worrying sometimes. Only ever had 1 rma due to damage in transit, and that was more due to product than the packaging.

Never again will I buy anything from fagbuyer. Not only the case but wrong items too. "I DID NOT FUCKING ORDER A N00B STICK OF 512 KINGSTON" [was a while ago :P]

Hehe yeh. My favourite incident was when I ordered a laptop bag, they sent me the wrong one and then accused me of trying to scam them when I informed them that I wanted the right bag or a refund.

The only way they'd accept it back was if I paid for the postage myself and sent copies of the invoice etc etc.

Can't say I've often ordered from ebuyer but I've never had any trouble with em. Last thing I ordered was a microphone, which came in a rather obscene size box full of air-bag packaging. God knows why they packed it like that when a jiffy bag would have done the trick....but hey I'm not complaining, I sell shit on ebay from time to time so packaging is always handy ^^

My new motherboard arrived with no problems from them. =O

Their "super-saver delivery" that costs nothing is great, too.

quite often I buy 2-3 80mm ebuyer value fans for 25p each, just to see the mammoth box they arrive in and the masses of air-bag stuff ;)

Ebuyer (like most online retailers) are fine once you've used them for a couple of things, but don't trust them with anything really important. That said, Dabs and Overclockers have flicked my balls far too many times, so ebuyer are a positive dream compared to them.

I'd rather pay for delivery and actually receive the right item tbh.

so got my ram today, 1 day early and fairly well packed, so actually a good job from ebuyer this time. I only have 1 question, why the hell did I not get 2Gb long before this??? BF2 on full settings with no slow down :D so im happy for now.

On the BF2, anyone know if the 1.41 patch altered single player AI at all?? Even on Expert setting the bots are UTTERLY USELESS, i mean even worse than they were before. Sometimes they just fuck off round the edge of the maps, and dont even try to be commander and send orders, they just seem to do whatever suits them. tis very odd
