View Full Version : LAN = kiss of death for hardware

As ever with a lan fast approaching, some vital part of my computer decides its time to start acting/blowing up.

On saturday whilst in windows reading a word document, my moniter turns black with an 'out of range' message. unplugged, replugged, still out of range so i used the keyboard to reboot and everything is fine.

Got an updated GFX driver yesterday (sunday) but again today (monday) while on the internet the same thing happened again.

I know this message appears if you set the resolution or refresh rate too high, but i havnt changed any graphics settings for a long while. The only recent change is the CPU but that was 23rd Feb.

System:
X2 4400
Asus A8N-Sli premium
XFX 6800GS XX
1 Gb Crucial

Anyone heard of this kind of thing? should I be worried my rig might be about to shuffle off this mortal coil?

Thanks

Michael

That sounds super odd, I suggest using driver cleaner to fully irradicate the traces of your last drivers, install latest drivers. Do not install modified drivers or 3rd party tools. If you are clocking your computer then stop doing that too. If all this fails to stop the problem then the finger is pointed first at the monitor then at the graphics card.

Was hoping that it was my PSU being on its way out that was causing the problems but....

Watching a dvd today and i got a vertical black strip on the RHS of my monitor ~ 4-5 cm wide. but the screen had somehow auto adjusted for the problem, but the wrong way. everything on screen was shifted the 4-5 cm to the right, so there was 8-10 cm of screen missing.

reboot and its all fine again, (needed the auto adjust button pressing once in windows)

so im thinking either graphics card or monitor? does this give any clue to anyone about which it mite be? or mite it be as simple as the cable?

Thanks

That's Vista for you. </poke>

Anyway, you have a couple of suspects... One is copy protection - are you using DVI or VGA? VGA I presume... Another is your cable.

But basically, the above should only cause -temporary- loss of sync - it sounds like either your monitor's fucking with you, or your graphics card's DACs are fucking with you. Or, like Yega said, it's a driver issue.

If your monitor and PC support DVI, use it. The problem will disappear.

im on XP still

Im using the dvi output on my card, then a converter as my monitors vga.

I had been using the drivers i was on for ages when the problem cropped up, then i updated before the last lan as i said before.

Think il just wait and see if anything happens again...
